Well, after only 4 days on Imruan I developed a nasty itchy rash along with the nausea , dizziness and headache. So now I have had to stop them and wait until I see my GI next week.

Was really hoping that I would get on ok with the Imuran so didn't have to mess about with Meds.

Ah well, it seems it's a bit of a right f passage with Crohn's, this medication jumping

From what I understand, sometimes when starting a new med, side effects like this appear, but only temporarily. Maybe you should see if you could stay on the Imuran for a while longer. There are many on Imuran that have alot of success. Be aware that Imuran and 6mp do take up to 6 months to reach effectiveness.
My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Has used Prednisone and Pentasa. Started Imuran (02/09), had an abdominal abscess (12/08). 2cm of Stricture.

Some folks who have had problems with Imuran are able to switch to its sister med 6mp. Maybe thats an option for you too.

I just started Imuran and have been on it for a month now. I started at 50mg and was really nauseous for the first few days and then it subsided. When I increased to 100mg, I vomited three times that day. I'm still nauseous on random days and throw up about 1-2 times per week. However, it's really random and not all the time. I'm going to stick it out for a few months and hope that the side effects go away. The other thing I'm noticing is headaches. Not bad headaches--just the kind that are annoying. I'm hoping that goes away too.

Thanks for all the messages. I ended up at emergency last night as the rash had gotten quite bad. Looked like I'd been sun burnt really bad with lots of welts and itching.

Have had to stop the Imuran until my appointment with GI next week.

Spose I may have to try the 6MP Nanners or something else. I'm not yet sure if the rash means an allergy or just a side affect but guess the GI will tell me.

Aronk and funkyvicca, I hope you both get on well with Imuran. Aronk, it sounds like you are having a bit of a rough time but hopfeully as you say, the side affects will go away. Funkyvicca, thsi forum has beena huge helpp these past few days of starting out on the Imuran.

73monte, it's a bit scary the length of time the medication takes to start making a real difference. Thanks for posting as my GI hadn't told me that

Huh, learn something new every day. I thought 6MP (was on before) and Imuran were the same thing. Thanks Nanners. Guess not:

6MP might help you. Put me in remission until I had elevated liver enzymes but now they have a Prometheus test to monitor that too!

INFO
So, maybe 6MPROMETHEUS® Thiopurine Metabolites is a test to monitor thiopurine medications. Because everyone metabolizes medications differently, your doctor may order this test to make sure your level of treatment is within a range that may help control symptoms.

PROMETHEUS® TPMT Genetics is a test to determine the presence of genetic mutations associated with a decreased production of the thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for the metabolism of a class of thiopurine drugs. Knowing the TPMT genotype allows your physician to individualize your dosing, and help identify patients who should not take these medications.

PROMETHEUS® TPMT Enzyme is a test to determine the amount of thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) enzyme in your red blood cells. This enzyme is responsible for the metabolism of a class of thiopurine drugs. Knowing the TPMT enzyme levels allows your physician to individualize your dosing, and helps identify patients who should not take these medications.

Hi all, thanks again for your messages and advise. Sorry to bring up an old post but thought I'd let you know what is going on, incase anyone out there is having the same trouble.

Nanners, you were right. Looks like I"m going to be put on 6MP. I saw the GI today and he has put my on a higher dose of prednisone (rats) and he is going to speak to dermatologist (due to the rash I got on Imuran) and if he says it's ok I will be starting on it.

I hope that the nausea and all that aren't as bad but we will see.

As the GI said today 'We just need to find your magic potion'

I was first put on Imuran. It made me really pukey and really tired. Tried switching to taking it at night, still no help for the side effects. Doc switched me to 6mp. He had at first had me taking it in the morning, but I got some side effects. So he switched it to bedtime and it did the trick while I was on it, no side effects at all except some hair shedding, which extra Folic Acid will help with. Good luck, hope the 6mp does the trick for you. Hugs!
