I keep reading where a lot of folks have turned to probiotics.  Where do I purchase and what specifics to I look for when purchasing.  I tried the yogurt from the grocery store, Yoplait it think it is, and all it did was increase the diarrhea.  I think it is more intended for people with constipation.

Diagnosed at 43

Meds:  Prednisone 40mg with 5mg taper per week, Lialda 4.8g, B-12 tablets, Folic Acid, Calcium +D, Humira, Prilosec

Hospitalizations:  Jan 2010 for uncontrolled flare.

Probiotics are very helpful for most people with crohns I think. I'm not an expert but you can purchase probiotics at most health food/supplement stores, and you will find them in the refrigerated section. They should be 10 billion live cultures or above I believe... good luck! If you'd like to continue to eat probiotic yogurt I would also consider eating it with extra strength lactaid just to make it easier to digest... that's what I do!

CVS and most drugstores carry some called Align (not refrigerated, about $30 per month) that some people here have good results with. I buy mine at drugstore.com, I use a brand called Flora-Q2 (again, not refrigerated, about $50 per month) and I can't miss a dose without noticing a grumbly tummy the next day. VSL #3 is another kind some people swear by - I just found VSL #3 capsules on amazon.com for $50 per month - those ones are refrigerated, it also comes in a powder which I think has more cultures but is much more expensive.

If I were you, I would start with the cheaper type (Align) and see if it helps. If you don't notice a difference after one packet/bottle of them, move on to the next kind.
CD since July 2007 - prenatal vitamins + extra vit. D, vit. C and iron, fish/flax oil, probiotics

Following excellent Omega-3 diet as per James Scala's 'The New Eating Right for the Bad Gut' - got me out of a flare.

It depends where you live too for how expensive the refridgerated ones are, I live in Alberta, Canada and I buy mine from a health food store called sangsters and I pay 40.00 for 120 caps (only one/day needed) and they're 10 billion live cultures and in their fridge, you can get the 60 caps for 20.00 so not all the refridgerated ones are too pricey.

What can get pricey is the ones where you have to take up to 4/day, now that gets expensive, so look for one that only needs one/day to be taken, has at least 10 billion live cultures...if you purchase at a health food store the clerk will hopefully be able to guide you if you tell them you have crohn's.

Just be sure to take them daily and indefinitely (flaring or not).

:)
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.

Hi PB4! Long time no text! If I could have contacted you via email I would have but since I can't, I just wanted you to know I'm still Crohn's disease free. It's been 6 years and 5 months now and I haven't had any problems at all. Bee Propolis got rid of it for me and I don't see that it will EVER come back. Just thought I'd let you know. Maybe when I have my 7th year anniversary I'll contact you again. You sure do post a lot. :) 14,146 posts? WOW. :)

I take a probiotic called Primadolphilus Reuteri by Natures Way. I buy it at a local health food store in the refrigerated section. It costs me $9.00 for 30 pills and you only have to take 1 a day. I just started it 6 mos ago and the big number back then was 5 billion CFU's and now its 10 billion CFU's, so I guess you could take 2. Might be cheaper than some of the ones mentioned above. Good luck!

Hi Brian...I've often wondered how you'be been doing!!!!  I still owe so much to you for sharing your experiance with the bee propolis (I'm forever grateful!)...I still take it since the day I started and at least it's helping me stay somewhat stabel, along with the other things listed in my sig, so I'm just happy I'm not as bad off as I was when I knew nothing about the BP...my GI is happy that I'm having some improvements with them and encourages me to use it daily and indefinitely cuz they're 100% non-toxic.

I'm glad you've maintained remission for so long and that you don't even have to take them anymore, that's awesome and I hope it continues for you.

Thanks for updating on how you've been doing...yes alot of posts for me eh LOL.

Take care and keep in touch (it's easy to here on the board, I no longer have that old email address anyways.

I've had good luck with the Align and a cheaper one PB8. The Align is available at BJ's now for about $48 for 2month supply and you can sometimes get $5 off coupons in the sunday paper. But the key is the keep trying until you find one that works for you.I tried a bunch, they all made things worse. I gave up for years until my doctor told me to try Align. It will take a month or so to see if it works so give it time.
