Hi Everyone...

I am new here and my story is long...so hope nobody falls asleep. I'm 32 years old and up until Nov. of 08' my only major medical problem had been endometriosis. Actually maybe it was earlier than Nov 08' when I started having severe fatigue, frequent fevers, night sweats, mouth sores and/or blood blisters in my mouth, severe muscle and joint pain, heel pain, hair loss, red palm rash. I've been seeing a Rheumy and have been thru all the testing for lupus, RA,etc. I've been on Plaquenil, Minocycline...neither of which helped at all. I've been resorting to Vicodin for my severe joint pain....it's really the only way I can continue to work full time and care for my 2 year old little guy.

Anyways....many, many years ago....I always had diarrhea. It seemed like almost everytime I ate.. For the past couple of years....the diarrhea turned to constipation...which has worsened lately but I just related it to my Vicodin use. The end of October/early Nov of last year....I started having episodes where my stool would be covered in blood and/or pink or blood tinged thick, icky mucous. A couple times...the bleeding was a lot and kind of scared me. I again...thought it was irritation from constipation or maybe hemorrhoids...(although I don't feel like I have hemorrhoids). Ever since those episodes...I've had very occasional episodes of bleeding or blood tinged mucous. I also have had right lower quad. pain as long as I can remember but I have endometriosis so always related it to that because I do have pain and horrible periods r/t the endo.

In late November I had a physical with my GP but didn't mention the bleeding/stool problems. He ordered some lab work which included a Vit B12 because I was getting severe cracks in the corners of my mouth and a sore tongue. Sure enough..my B12 came back low so now I'm on oral B12. A ferritin was checked r/t some muscle twitching I have....ferritin also came back low.

My rheumy learned of theses labs and was "weirded out" by them. She asked me about any GI problems so I then told her about the bleeding, mucous and constipation. She became very concerned so ordered a celiac panel...which came back fine. She then said her next concern was crohn's because it could cause all the sx. i'm having and the lab deficiencies...d/t absorption issues.
So..had colonoscopy on 2/1.  Did Movi Prep...didn't go until 11pm that night....then at 4:30am and 7:30am...was just finally starting to turn clear when we left.  Scope results were "normal" but "incomplete" exam d/t "suboptimal prep" and they also couldn't make the last bend...which sucks because my pain is on that side and I've read that B12 is absorbed in the terminal ileum.....which they didn't see.  Now I don't know what to do....why the heck didn't my prep work and what if something is going on.....that they couldn't see??  I guess I'm wondering what I should do now..ask for another scope, camera scope, x ray testing??  Help? Oh...and I haven't pooped since the scope Monday.....I bought some Miralax and started yesterday.
Any words of wisdom for me?  Again..sorry this was so long...I'm complicated..lol.

If the scope wasn't sucessful ask the Dr. to use a pill cam that you swallow and they can watch on a monitior as it passes through you. and Wecome to healing well!

Hi have you seen a Gi Doctor yet? I would get an appt with a GI doctor as soon as you can.
They are the one whom can diagnose if you have crohn's or not.
Hi, I am teddybearweiser, I am a male.
I was diagnosed with crohns disease when i was admitted to the hospital

in 1992, in Jan of 1993 I was back in the hospital for surgery for my crohns. I had part of my right colon resectioned with ilecolonstomy.

I agree the doc you should be seeing is a Gastroenterologist not a Rheumy. Sounds like you might have Crohns with constipation vs diarhea many have. I suffer with more constipation than diarrhea and have to take stool softners nightly in order to keep things softer and easier to pass. I think the Miralax will work in much the same manner. It could be that you have a stricture or narrowing going on in your intestines that is causing you constipation. There are many other tests that can be ran, you may need to do a different prep and have another scope. I am not sure if a pillcam would be a good recommendation for you, because of the possible block. But I do suggest you get in with a GI and let them check you out. Good luck!

Hi all..

I think finding a GI doc is a great idea and probably my next step. I've been dealing with the Rheumy because of all the other autoimmune type issues...joint pain, fevers, palm rash,etc....it's only recently...(well since Nov.)...that i've really been having any major bowel issues. I was a skeptic in the beginning when she mentioned the colonoscopy.....I picture someone with crohns as having horrible diarrhea, pain and weight loss. I have had the right sided pain but always linked it to my endo, obviously I don't have diarrhea and believe me...I haven't lost weight..lol..eek. It really does make sense though...especially now with the ferritin and b12 deficiences... and I am learning that everyones Crohns sx vary so greatly.

I am going to get in contact with one of my docs this week and ask them about a GI referral. I had my scope done with a general surgeon at the medical center I work at....just felt like the right first step because I was so nervous about the scope itself and it helped to have people I know and work with. We don't have any GI docs at our clinic...so I will have to find a good one to go to. :)

Thanks everyone!!!!

hey olivia, I feel bad for you, but crohns isn't really all abour d, alot us suffers have both c and d, depends, I have had 4 surgeries and 2 resections, so my small bowel has inflamation where they kep doing the resections, so with inflamation comes swelling which can cause alittle constipation, once i go in the morning then usually I'll 2 or 3 more times getting rid of the bile from the night before, so my stool is never formed always loose. I've had 9 ft. of disease removed in my small int. It vary's with everybody, and for sure pain med's do slow everything down. and when i have inflamed area flamming I have to bite the bullet and take vicodon, and then it's usually 1 or 2 days of some constipation. good luck to you for sure
