Over the last several years along with the colitis and IBS, I have suffered with reflux and indigestion. I loved my caffeine and depended on it so much (ok, I was probably addicted to it.) Anyway, I started to notice a pattern of the days when I would drink a diet soda (or regular) take nexium and the next day I would have diarrhea and cramps. After getting only 1/2 well with the colazal, I decided to quit caffeine, nexium and see what happened. Well, I have to say after taking sodas, tea out of my diet, I no longer needed nexium or other meds like zantac and my colitis/IBS has also gotten WAY better.  They also upped my colazal dose by 1 pill a day. But I was still having problems until I quit my daily routine of a large tea and a soda, nexium. I read a post a while back about sodas and if they affect  your disease. So, in my case, it did. I just hope I keep feeling better b/c I was really sick and tired of having so many stomach problems that wouldn't go away. I don't think sodas are good for anyone. I may try some decaff tea at home to see how that goes.

When I am flaring I cannot tolerate caffiene at all. But in remission, I can have a little soda here and there with no problem. Glad to hear eliminating the soda helped your stomach. Hugs!

my wife went to a gi guy once, he was kind of a character, he told her he got rich from soda's. so one other thing you can put a rusty nail in a can of soda and overnight it will take the rust off. if that tells you what it does to our gut's. i hven't drank soda's in years. they are the worst

Yea, I think you are right artist guy. I feel sooo much better after quitting them. They are very acidic but I was so addicted to them. I only drank 1 soda a day and then some tea but still, it can't be good for anybody.

it's also that carbination that will get you as well, I don't have near the acid reflux when I quit drinking soda's. mine was diet coke. still just as bad as reg. coke. my work we get all the free soda's we want on our breaks. we have a soda fountain, man i see alot of over weight people drinking that crap all day, you're better off to drink coffee than soda, but i guess it's all about moderation.

Yea, I don't think the carbonation is good either. It bloats you up too. Coffee drinking has not been associated with that many health issues like sodas in terms of obesity and diabetes. I think people with ulcers and reflux have trouble with it though. I don't like it, so I'll stick to water and soy milk I suppose. I am glad to have that monkey off my back and hopefully it will help my GI tract to heal up finally.

I cut out all diet coke almost six months ago (right when I started to flare) and trust it will help me, although I will enjoy one now and then.

What stumps me is when I was in the hospital six weeks ago, after severe vomiting with a completely shut down bowl, I was given a blueberry muffin with margerine and black coffee with non dairy sweetner ... the hospitals must be in cohots with the soft drink companies to support the doctors (i.e. to Artist Guys comment) ...
44-single mom diagnosed with Crohn's 2004 via pill camera    6MP kicked into remission (along with modified diet) so went off in 2006.

2009/2010 acute flare and hospitalization - now on Imuran. Currently taking 55 mg prednisone.
Current problem - protruding thrombosed hemorrhoids (external as well as internal).

Not everyone has to avoid soda. Like Crohns it is a very individual thing. JMHO
