Do any of you have any experience with taking Thalidomide for treating crohn's disease.  Apparently in studies it was shown to be quite effective in healing apthous ulcers like those found in CD patients.  It is quite a dangerous drug for women of childbearing age and multiple forms of birth control need to be used.  If anyone has experience with this, I would like to hear your story.

My doc brought it up once, years ago, but we never tried it. There is some evidence that it helps close fistulas too. In fact, I should make a note to ask him about it my next appointment. I just started MTX though and I'm sure the two can't be combined!

Good question - I'm eager to see if others have experience with this med.

quite a few years ago it was brought up to me.. but the restrictions for its use was too much..no minor children in the home, no women of child bearing age unless they go on birth control even if they are not the patient, locked container, etc...

My MD mentioned it at my last appt and she said it is very restictive to prescribe. 1. I would have to have two negative pregnancy tests before prescribing. 2. You have to call the distributor from the hospital and answer their questions each month and give informed consent of the risks of the drug. 3. prescription is for thirty days at a time, you must come to the hospital each month for a pregnancy test 4. after all of the tasks are completed the MD may prescribe months worth of medication. It does sound quite cumberson to obtain each month, but if it would heal up my intestines it might certainly be worth the hassle. I hope someone comes along with some first hand experience soon.
