I'm currently down to 2 pills (10 mg) of prednisone and I am supposed to go down to 1 pill tomorrow per my GI's instructions after my appointment last week (I was feeling awesome! and have been since starting prednisone in December at 40 mg). I am also on 100 mg of imuran every night and have had no ill effects from that either than some hair thinning. She said that since the imuran was working I could get off the prednisone about 3 weeks early. Now I have been on 10 mg for a week and just today have had D and some cramping, no blood or anything. I'm not sure what caused this to happen, I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary yesterday.
Any ideas as to what I should do? Does this mean I should call my GI tomorrow?
I'm sticking to bland mushy food today and hoping for the best...
I hope you're all well and thanks for listening!

If you are reluctant to go down to 5 mg tomorrow, then by all means call your GI. You could have eaten something that caused the diarrhea and you will return to your normal in the AM. Or it could be a sign that you are getting more inflammation. You might be one of the individuals that has become steroid dependent. People that are steroid dependent have a return of symptoms when they get down to 10-20 mg of prednisone. This might not be you, but it does happen.

If I were in your shoes, I would see how my guts were in the morning and make a decision based on how I was doing. If you are still having diarrhea, then you probably should call the GI and seek her guidance.

I had a flare and was on 20mg pred tapering down and as soon as I hit the 10mg my symptoms started coming back again, I tapered down and finished the course but then the doctor put me striaght back on the 20mg again to taper down yet again as all my blood tests came back abnormal with high on inflammation etc, I am also now using a predsol retention enema(pred 20mg) at night whilst I'm on 10mg oral pred. Hopefully this time I wont flare back up again, although I know I am still flaring at the moment but not as bad as the start!
I would wait and see what happens in the next day or two as well, maybe its just your body adjusting again but if you are in pain at all and carry on cramping I would call your GI to make certain.
Good luck and hope you can stay off the prednisone!

you may be one of those unfortunate people like me that flares the minute i get down to a lower dose of pred. On high doses of pred the D stops and i begin to feel better i have been on 200 mg immuran for over a year now and as soon as i lower to 20 mg pred the D is back i can't go below and it takes 50mg pred to keep me in remission. I am off pred now and having D constantly and blood and mucous and just started remicade and hoping this works cause ive been on pred for almost 2 years off and on and my body can't take the steroids anymore i have full blown diabetes now and have to inject insulin 4 times a day ( on pred was hospiatalized my glucose level went to 33 which im in canada it should be 4-6)

Hopefully it was just a fluke but if it continues don't leave it for long stay on top of it. I hope you can get of the prednisone though its like a double edged sword!!!!

Thanks for the advice guys!! I feel better this morning than I did yesterday for sure. I don't know if this is TMI, but I also got my period this morning (unexpected, second time this month) and I always get D before that and stomach cramps. So aside from that being a whole other problem/mystery in itself, it could explain why I got sick. I'm staying on 10 mg for now until it clears up completely and then I will try to go down to 5mg. Thanks again for your advice!
And Terry I hope you feel better and eventually get off the evil pred as well! It is definitely like a double edged sword. :(
