I've been recently diagnosed with an ano-vaginal fistula as well as an old abscess/fistula site to the left of my rectum which was previous closed with remicade treatments. Anyone out there with ano-vag fistulas or recto-vag fistulas that could give me some insight into this new problem? I had surgery on 2/26 for the ano-vag area and had a seton drain placed, and also the surgeon debrided the old abscess site and I now have a seton drain in that location also. Plan is to start Humira next week, lets hope it can close these sites. I had to go off of remicade a year ago due to repeated upper respiratory/chest/head cold issues and was off meds and doing great until the old abscess site reactivated itself around Xmas time and I was waiting to see if it would heal on its own... it did close, but obviously it found it's way to tract somewhere else to the vagina. Just in case you are wondering why I wasn't on any crohns medication after the remicade, my GI doc had done 2 colonoscopy's on me and could not find any signs of crohn's disease. With my crohns, I was never bothered by diarrhea or stomach upset, no weight loss , in fact I'm overweight. I was diagnosed at age 32. I had a bump to my head in 2002 (very minor) and it was all downhill from there after that minor head injury. The thought is that the head injury was a trigger to make my immune system go haywire... My thyroid went overactive, I developed dysautonomia, and a peri-rectal abscess. Never knew that I had Crohns disease, like I said, never had the typical symptoms except for the peri -rectal problem.
