My daughter had a routine appt. today with her (new) GI. Long story short, she's recommending getting off Pentasa altogether, and after a Metabolite test, increasing her Imuran by 25mgs.
She has been doing well for sometime now, which I know is not necessarily and exact science for the future. I felt uncomfortable tampering with her current formula, so she agreed to leave things status quo for now, and re-assess in 4 months.
She does admit to some evidence of Pentasa and Imuran working well synergistically, but in general does not feel Pentasa is a worthwhile drug.
The Imuran is only slighty under the optimum theraputic level, so is likely still effective at the current dosage.
Does anyone have an opinion, or advise on this?

Thanks,
Tom.
My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Has used Prednisone and Pentasa. Started Imuran (02/09), had an abdominal abscess (12/08). 2cm of Stricture.

Has your daughter gained back some weight? If she has it might be a good idea to change her immuran dose, but otherwise I would think that if is is not broke... as long as she feels ok.

She has gained a few pounds, bus is still borderline of the weight related dose she is currently on.

I don't see how Pentasa hurts (if she isn't having any side effects from it). So, it'd consider staying on the pentasa, and upping her imuran dose, if the doc thinks that's warranted. Sure, the pentasa maybe doing nothing, but I certainly would not want to find out by trial and error whether stopping it will actually cause a flare up.
