Is it normal for a Crohnie to be low in it? My GI ran labs last week and called me himself to tell me that my folic acid level was way too low and it was important to get that up. He called some in for me and I picked it up tonight.
I always think of folic acid and pregnancy going together and that's what most of the info I find online is about.
I've never been low in it before - is it normal to be low in this following a resection? Or during a flare? How does it relate to the digestive system?

I've taken folic acid since I was diagnosed. It helps ward off anemia and helps overall cell growth and healing.
Diagnosed with CD July 2007
Currently on Remicade, Imuran, probiotics, folic acid, multivitamin.
Resection December 2009

My gynae told me that it's an important building block in DNA replication, so if you're in a stage where you're doing a lot of cell growth (and maybe healing) that might be why you need supplementation / might get low in folate.

Sorry I can't be more specific than that. I'm not really a sciency person.

I take it because I take sulfasalazine which depletes folic acid. Been on it for a couple of years now.

I wish I'd taken it as soon as I was diagnosed. I now take folic acid and biotin every day because I am on remicade and 6MP and I've heard it can counter-act the hair-loss which some people experience.

I don't know if I'm imagining it but I swear the biotin and folic acid has made my hair grow incredibly fast!!
