Hi Friends,
It has been several months since I've been on here. I'm happy to report that my Crohn's-related arthritis subsided and I am doing really well. Please listen to and hopefully find hope from my story.
It's a far cry from a year ago when my ankles were swollen so much that I couldn't get shoes on and I had arthritic pains in my knees, pinky and jaw. A colonoscopy confirmed that the Crohn's inflammation was back in my intestines after a bowel resection four years prior. He wanted to put me on Remicade or Imuran. I was really worried about the potential side effects of those drugs so I was willing to try alternatives. While I was very happy that those drugs were available, I decided on my own to try acupuncture. I know that my GI thought I was crazy. He gave me a perscription for Imuran, which I never filled, and went on my way. I bet he wonders why he hasn't heard from me in a year!
Anyway, I went to an acupuncturist who took a thorough history. She started acupuncture and within a couple sessions I at least had pain relief. She also gave me a vegetarian glucosamine, which - no lie - helped my arthritic pains within two days. She also gave me a CDSA stool test to take at home. I was on the fence about it b/c insurance doesn't cover it and it was about $200 out of pocket, but I am so glad that I took it!!! My acu was able to determine that I literally had NO GROWTH of lactobacillus beneficial bacteria in my gut. She gave me this test b/c she had a UC patient who tested with the same deficiency. She then gave another Crohn's patient the same test and he was also deficient in lactobacillus. I find it incredibly interesting that two of her Crohn's patients and one of her UC patients all lacked the exact same bacteria. Why doesn't traditional medicine look into this????
My GI knew nothing of the test and didn't put stock in it, but I do!!! She immediately put me on a targeted natural probiotic with no fillers in it. She also gave me a Chinese herb called Isatis cooling. It has anti-inflammatory properties. It was a slow process, but my ankles slowly resolved and I began to feel whole again. I began acupuncture last May and by September felt like and looked like my old self.

I take fish oil twice daily and continue to take Pentasa. My acu thinks she can actually get me well enough to stop taking Pentasa, but I am leery of this. Since it is metabolized and goes through the body quickly and efficiently, I feel comfortable taking it long term and in conjunction with these herbs. I added Resveratrol as an antioxidant on my own.

In short, I feel fantastic and am really hoping that some of you might find similar success by using complementary therapies. It may not prove a long term solution, but maybe it will. I can only say that I am really grateful that I followed my gut (pun intended) and it led me to acupuncture and better health!

My prayers and blessings are with you as I have been where many of you are.

Glad that is working for you. I think different things work for different people.
Before I was diagnosed with colitis via colonoscopy, I too went to a holistic doctor. I found the lab that does all the stool testing like that and I too had zero good bacteria! That shocked me because I had taken probiotics from time to time. Now, I take VSL #3.
I wonder why we are all deficient in lactobacillus? I've taken a lot of antibiotics in my day but not a lot recently.
Reminds me, I haven't had my probiotics in a few days, I need to go eat some bugs! I take my western meds too.
diagnosed 1/09 with colitis location: sigmoid colon with some diverticular disease as well
IBS, asthma/allergies, prediabetes, high BP, fibromyalgia, GERD
low thyroid
claritin, singulair, diovan, progesterone, VSL#3 probiotic, Vit. D, colazal
pexeva, rolaids, pepsid (as needed)
Blood test positive for Crohn's via prometheus ibd serology panel

this is very interesting, I am in the same position as you where a month ago I had to go to the emergency for pain and the CT scan showed that my inflammation had gotten worse from my first CT scan 3 months ago so the docs told me that I need Remicade and Imuran. I have been taking Imuran for a week now and still trying to get the paperwork done for the Remicade. The funny thing is though since that CT scan I have been symptom free for the whole month pretty much even though the doc told me to completely cut off my Pentasa and taper my pred aince he thought those arent working for me and i need to start the more potent imuran and remicade. In the meantime I started on the Macrobiotic Diet and started Chinese accupressure too. So basically I was on the least medicine i had been on since being diagnosed yet thank god iv been pretty much symptom free for a month now barring occasional fatigue, I spoke to my doc about all this and he said even tho diets and such natural remeides can help with symptoms he does not believe they can actually reverse my inflammation and judging from last months CT scan he "highly reccomends starting the Remicade as soon as possible". I am quite confused because I have been feeling quite well and I am wary of the Remicade side effects. I am wondering whether I should ask him for another diagnostic test before starting to take the Remicade to see if diet and stuff can indeed possibly start to heal the inflammation.

Hi Jhicks...so glad you are doing well!!! yeah

I just want to say that it seems we often hear what you said above (that I highlighted) from folks who go to an alternative doc. I've been reading this forum for close to three years now and I'm quite certain I've read this 5,6, maybe 7 times from different people who have gone to an alternative doc! IT IS VERY INTERESTING! Their stories sound JUST like yours! It certainly makes a STRONG case for taking probiotics and eating a high-quality yogurt and other fermented foods!!! Also for limiting the junk in our diet which feed the BAD bacteria that competes with the good in our intestines.

I won't try to answer your question, "Why doesn't traditional medicine look into this????" My answer would fall under the rule "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!"

Thank you for sharing your story!!! It's always sooooo good to hear a success story! :-)

Hi EMom,

Has your son tried acupuncture? My acu is incredibly knowledgeable about Chinese herbs, too, and she has me taking some. She treated me today for an oncoming cold. I LOVE her. She has literally changed my life. My best to you and your son.
