I've been flaring since january, and have also noticed I have been getting a lot more hot flushes and also feeling very tired at times, so much so that 12 hours sleep has been the latest, other than the nights when I'm running to to the loo! On the nights I am having 7 hours sleep by the afternoon I need a nap cos I'm exhausted again, and the hot flushes are any time of day but mostly early mornings,in the evenings and especially at night.
Does flare ups cause early menopause?? My periods have been still there every month but now have been varying fron between 2 and 3 days which I used to be on for about 4-5 days and I also noticed now that I am really heavy with a lot of clotting on the first day and then next to nothibng the 2nd and 3rd day.

I would think that you are a little too young for menopause if your age of 40 is current and correct. I know the disease itself can cause those symptoms too, you may want to run it by your doc. Maybe even get your hormones checked to see how they are. Good luck!

I'm 43 and at first I thought it was early menopause also. When I talked to my Dr, he said that the exhaustion and hot flashes are symptoms of crohn's also. My periods are different also. I used to be around 4-5 days, but now, it's just bloody mucous the first day, then really heavy days 2 and 3, and then bloody mucous again for 4-7. I hate it because my crohns symptoms are SO much worse when I'm on and just before my period! I am even more miserable for that week and a half or so! I'm getting the crohns pain and the period pain, more D,  and alot more physical exhaustion. It is so hard to get up and go to work during that time! I just want to call in sick for the week.

My gyno suggested endometrial ablation which basically burns the lining of the uterus and will completely stop the period or drop it down to just spotting for a couple days. The problem is that it does nothing for the hormones which I think is the main cause of the symptoms to begin with. Still looking into it though. A couple days (at the most) is better than 7!

Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 14. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistula's, perianal and perivaginal.
Dr. wants to try Humira...STILL waiting on that! Not sure what is taking so long...
Currently just take a probiotic, a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, and fish oil. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

I'm 45 and my periods have changed just about every 7 years or so since I started getting them when I was 12, but I always have more CD symptoms when I have my periods. I did have polyps and fibroids so last fall I had an endometrial ablation to get rid of them and help with my periods. Of course I'm one of the ones who still gets a period after the procedure, but it is lighter and getting more so each month. As far as menopause I haven't started that yet, no flashes or anything. But, my mother, who also had CD, started menopause at 36. The doctors told her it was from the prednisone use, but who knows it was 41 years ago and they knew so little then compared to now. I was only 4 at the time and she thought she was pregnant again, but no it was the start of menopause. I've always been paranoid that I would go through it early too, even though her mother didn't go through it until she was well into her 50's. Every other part of my medical history has followed my mother so I figured this would too, but so far so good.

You should be able to have a simple blood test to see where your hormone levels are so you know if you are starting menopause. At least then you will know if you want to do any type of treatment, hormone, natural or whatever.

Grayeyedblonde - if you want to email me about the ablation, just let me know, my email is in my profile but it is one I don't check that often, so just post that you are emailing so I know to check it.

ashworth...I'm 44 and was wondering if I would end early too (actually hoping since I am not having kids anyway!)
I did not see BC in your list of meds. I know my period has gotten to just about nothing and my Gyn said a long time on the pill can cause ever shortening periods. I have similar to what you have...one "big"day then very little and only a couple of days.
I do also notice my period is lighter if I am flaring or just sick - had food poisoning just before my last period and it almost never showed up.
Dx'd '90 (emergency rupture), symptoms ignored long before that, '03 fistulas and bad flagyl reactions, B12 weekly, Pentasa [until I surrender to the bigger meds]
I'm riding on the escalator of life....
