Hi All, I'm new to this forum. I was diagnosed with Crohn's about a year and a half ago. I was able to keep it under control for a while, but have recently been experiencing renewed symptoms.

I wanted to ask you some questions about Probiotics. How many of you have seen success with probiotics? How did you find the 'right' ones?

When you found one that helped, did it help right away? Or did you see increased bloating and/or other symptoms at first?

I'm thinking about starting with Lactobacillus Acidophilus. I was researching it and found that there are a few different strains (DDS-1, LA-5, and NCFM). Does it matter which one of these I take?

Lastly, what are some respectable brands? Do you have a preferred source (e.g., internet, Walgreens, Whole Foods, etc.)?

Thankful for your advice!

hi there.  i tried the vsl #3 but it upset my stomach terribly...too strong i guess.  i've tried a few others but the one i like the best and use (not as regualrly as i should) is from Dr. Mercola's website-- i think it's drmercola.com.  he always has good articles and stuff on there - natural and homeopathic stuff and general tips on why certain food, processes etc. are bad.  interesting.  sorry not trying to pitch his site.  i do like that product though.

I use Primadolphilus Fortify and it works really well for me. I was suffering with about 4-6 loose bms a day, when I first starting taking probiotics. First probiotic I took was a acidolphilus bacillius and it lower my daily bm;s down to 1-2. Now that I am on the Primadolphilus Fortify it has helped me even more. We all need to find a good probiotic and we tend to have more bad bacteria in our guts than good. Others have used Align, Culterelle and VSL#3. You should find one with at least 10 billion CFU's. Good luck!

I take Flora Source by Nutri-Health which works well for me. I tried VSL#3, and Align, which did not work as well. I think you need to give the probiotics at lease a month to see if you think it's working. I tend toward constipation...I thought the VSL #3 made it worse, but it would probably be good for D. Everyone has a different bacterial balance, so you really need to patiently experiment. I'm glad I didn't give up.

I am taking a probiotic with too many strains to list here, but the most important consideration is finding one that is pure. No fillers, dairy, wheat, soy, etc. My physician ordered a Complete Stool kit in Jan. 2009 and the recommendations for this probiotic and digestive enzymes were based upon the results. I had candida overgrowth and I wasn't digesting meat or vegetable fiber well. After 15 months, I no longer have diarhea, bloating, rashes, itchy eyes and a swollen tongue. This doc also ordered blood labs to evaluate exactly what I was lacking in supplements and diet.

Now, my disease attacked only my terminal ileum and resulted in 3 bowel resections in the last 37 years. I am left with extensive abdominal adhesions, and I will fight the candida the rest of my life. I also developed pancrea*** which was caused by 6MP. It seems to be resolved.

What I'm saying is that if you can find out what is going on in your guts now, you can target the problem and avoid spending alot of money hit or miss. I know there are so many other people here who have crohn's in several areas and their insight will help you. Luck and hugs!

Thank you all for your very valuable input. You are helpful!

I went to Whole Foods today to look at probiotics, and it was a little daunting. Do you think the compounds in the capsules are of a negligible amount? I'm doing the SCD diet, so I want to avoid things like soy, maltodextrin, dairy, etc. It looks like a lot of capsules contain these ingredients

jmo, but if you're doing the SCD, I'd try to stick with a probiotic that is "legal"--at least for the first year or so. Lucy's Kitchen carries some that are legal, but other brands are as well. Just check your label carefully. Mercola might be a good place to start.

Remember, though, that Elaine Gottschall (SCD) believed if you are eating the home made yogurt every day, there is no need for store bought probiotics! smilewinkgrin That said, we use 'em!
