I have tried twice to take Omega 3 fish oil capsules because I hear they are great for inflammation. However, even at half the dosage they cause my guts to gurgle like crazy and then the next morning I am cleaned out like colonoscopy prep. Anybody else experience this? Is it something to adjust to?

Thanks,

Bad fissure Feb 2005. Started Remicade 2006. Fissure #1 healed, now deal with smaller fissure that comes and goes. Clean scope 2009 except for fissure. Also on Pentasa.

I can't say I've heard of anyone with that problem, but how about maybe switching to flax seed oil? It's also a good source of omega 3. I use it as a vegetarian alternative to fish oil.

if you put the pills in the fridge it helps with the burps. Also, I have a problem with salmon based pills so I have to read what kind of fish is used. You might look at that.

thanks redadmin! I have tried refrigerating, freezing and taking at different times of day and still fishy burps. I cracked my mom up one day after we had gone out for pizza and I burped and said..oh..pizza and anchovies!! I have never looked to see if they are salmon based. I could check that and try again.

I use up to 3 a day.  I usually take them on an empty stomach and seldom get fish burps, but I'm not really sure if there is any benefit to me using them?  I think some brands are worse than others for repeating on you.

They sell enteric coated fish oils and that is supposed to dissolve in the small intestine.  I believe enteric coated was used in the studies but don't take my word for it.

Don't worry about it, Snaps. D can happen with fish oil supplementation: it's common enough that dietitians warn about it... though it sounds as if you've had an uncommonly tough time. That must have been unpleasant for you!

Maybe you could experiment with the lowest dose possible and build from there, or try eating several serves of fish a week.

Maybe switch brands?? Sometimes if the purity isn't where it should you can get those fish burps and gastro distress. I take around 14 grams of EPA/DHA through fish oil a day and have no ill effects. In fact, I feel better than ever at this point in my life.

I'm supposed to take omega 3 along with Tricor for my high triglycerides, but had to stop taking them. They really
hurt my stomach, and seem to make my crohns worse. ( I was taking Omacor, prescription only)

I found enteric coated omega 3 oil that I have absolutely no problems with . I suggest you try that.

Lamb61 if you get itchy all over I would take bets you have an allergy and need to look into what fish is in your pills.

Also for the burps, I have found Nordic Naturals are nice, they have a flavored coating and it makes the fishy not so bad.

My husband is taking a Omega 3, 6, 9 that I tried and it gave me pretty bad cramps. I too have been looking for a good Omega 3 but haven't had luck either. I did hear recently though that the Nordic Naturals are pretty good although I have not tried them. I get frustrated with spending money on supplements only to find that they upset my stomach too much. I feel like I am throwing money out. I am not sure if anyone else is like me, but since I have had my resections I just don't tolerate as many supplements as I used to. Oh and the flaxseed ones made me even sicker.

At the store the other day I saw they have odorless fish oil tablets -- I guess they're new. I've been taking them for a few days now and haven't had any fish aftertaste, unlike other fish oil tabs I've taken.

Haven't met a fish oil product that agrees with me yet...and I took so many of them...I now just stick to my flaxseed oil...which is trial and error with these too, cuz I think some of the coatings give me problems...

However, to note, I have disease in my stomach and live with PPI's...so I can't really tolerate a lot of fish unless it is really fresh, and not so greasy...otherwise, upset stomach...nausea to actual projectile vomiting...(and that includes the fish oil pills)...
