I'm starting to think that Entocort is a just big SHAM!  this is the 3rd time in 7 years I'v3 tried EC and again, ...nothing.  I'm coming off of Prednisone for 9 months and I'm sure my body is laughing at this Entocort.  To me taking EC after Prednisone is like watching soft core adult movies... all bark but no bite.  I'm getting to the point where I just want to break the capsules open and take the EC straight up!  HELP!! mad

Please don't break the capsules. You might lose some, if not all of the medicines effect. You may not notice too
much effect from entocort, I didn't, but like prednisone, it will slowly reduce inflammation, just not as quickly. It's
a good stop gap, while you give your body a rest from pred.

I think by opening the capsules, it allows the EC to hit the bloodstream right away. The dissolving capsules can possibly cause the med to just pass thru, making it useless. i don't know. i'm just really frustrated with this stuff. Its over $900 bucks a month!! for what???

Wow, that's a lot of money, so I can understand your frustration. Is there any way you can go back to cheap old pred?

The Entocort is designed to release exactly where you need it most - the terminal ileum. If you break open the capsules, the Entocort will dissolve before it can even reach the terminal ileum...absolutely do NOT break them.

Because EC releases mainly in the TI, not only do you get help where you need it, but you also avoid many of the terrible system-wide side effects of prednisone.

Entocort can take a few weeks to reach maximum benefit  - but if your Crohn's is NOT mainly in the TI it won't benefit you. Also, it doesn't work for everybody.

Give it a chance, because it is far safer than prednisone.

(Was on Entocort since April 06.) Never had D. 4.5 mg LDN, SCD multivit, homemade yogurt, 5000IU vit D3, 1000 mg calcium, 27-54 mg iron, monthly B12 shots, daily oral B12 1000, 10mg zinc. SCD diet modified years ago to include potatoes and rice.

I am actually taking a dissolvable Entocort pill used for Entocort enemas to treat Crohn's in my duodenum. I put the pill in a glass of water, it dissolves and I drink it before my first meal to give it a chance to absorb where it is needed, just past the stomach. And I think its worked but I have inflammation further down that is still a problem. A scope over a month ago showed narrowings and a fistula just a few inches past my stomach. After that I was given the Entocort to dissolve. An upper GI follow-thru last week showed no fistula. So maybe it worked?!?

I also read on another forum where someone actually broke the capsules on the advice of their doctor to treat duodenal Crohn's.

Not that I recommend breaking capsules, but if you knew where the Crohn's was posing a problem, and if it was in the first part of the bowel, then perhaps suggest to your doctor either taking the pill for enemas or breaking the capsule.
