Hmm.... Ensure is pretty sweet... I'm not sure if it has artificial sweetners.... But I suppose it wouldn't be considered natural...

Uhh... It's not a nutritional supplement... but if you want something that's healthy, does not have artificial sweetners, high fructose corn syrup... It's about 600 calories per bottle and it gives you one whole serving of fruits and one whole serving of veggies.... It's called V8 Fusion... I dunno if you'd find it at a health food store, though...
I think I am being picked on by life, sometimes. But's that okay. Life and I are good buddies... I know life doesn't mean no harm. It just is the way it is. I can accept that.

I'd say sugar IS a natural sweetener because it is made from natural products, sugar cane or sugar beet. In meal-replacement drinks that are promoted as "natural," you'll see ingredients like "evaporated sugar cane syrup" but that's just another way of saying sugar to make it sound more "organic." What it comes down to is that if you need a liquid supplement (meal-replacement drink), and these are indeed very helpful for people with Crohn's, by definition they are products in which the carbohydrates already broken down into sugars and the fiber removed to make them easy to digest and fats are broken down into oils and essential fatty acids. A lot of the ingredients that look scary are simply vitamins and minerals (referred to by their chemical names) added to make the formulas complete meal-replacement products.

Ensure has all of the vitamins and nutrients you need in it PLUS the calories to gain back some of the weight. You can live on that stuff - and the chocolate's not bad.

All I know is I used to drink ensure all the time BEFORE I was diagnosed.

When people say you can live on ensure, that's true but probably not very well. When you take vitamins out of the context of fruits and vegetables, they are way less effective. In any case, I would use a polymeric formula to get out of a flare instead of using prednisone.

One that I know of that's is called Absorb Plus. Check it out.

I would just like to add one caveat to jpnutrionist's post, DON'T stop the prednisone without weaning down properly first and doctors knowledge.

Just to make a small correction, vitamins and minerals are equally effective whether taken in the form of fruit or added to a meal-replacement product. What you get from the fruit in addition to the vitamins and minerals is fiber and sugars (carbohydrates). Fiber is good for a healthy digestive tract but is not added to many enteral formulas in order to make them as easy as possible to digest for people who are ill.

Has anyone tried Elemental diet to give your bowels rest and heeling time? Any idea where to find it? I was diag with US for 15 years and just in Feb was told I have a non specific Crohns in the colon and rectum. I am currently in a flare and trying to recover from bad fistula surgery and anal fissures. Had 2 Remicade infusions - so far no change. Still taking Asacol.
