Guess the best way to answer that one is,,,What Billy dude ? Have I missed something ? A TV news cast , something like that? Really ,my gator catching days are long past . If they leave me alone I do the same. Something tells me this Bill dude is an ugly little fat man with no teeth and a big chaw of tobacco, wearing white rubber boots and overalls with no shirt,,,,right ?

Lyn, why should I turn the TV on to see what I can see from the back porch or while fishing. I went with a friend of mine last week. His little boat is 10 ft long. While we were out ,a gator much longer than the boat came up next to us and gave us a look see . Guess we didn't look appetizing because he swam away . I'm also always exterminating some critter , from the beavers that eat the bark off my trees to the cotton mouth moccasin in the garden. Killed a copperhead snake in my garage last weekend and the neighbor found one in the fileing cabinet of her shop. Armadillos dig holes under my patio and we get the occational skunk . You dont want to catch one of those though. We have had black bears and bob cats , otters and mink, all trying to eat the ducks. I must say of the bunch the bear was the neatest. After he removed everything from my garbage he cleaned it like it was washed . The milk carton was opened up and the foil wrap was licked clean too. Only thing he didn't eat was a tomato and I am guessing thats because there were no fixing for the rest of a salad. Think he said something like, " what, no crouton ? "

Ohhhhhh come on Lyn. My place is safe. All you have to do is watch where you step , always check under the patio furniture cushion before sitting down, never reach where you cant see , look outside before you open the door and stay out of the water. Other than that its fine. Oh, and dont kick the cat if he has a white stripe down his back....

Sniper or Nawlinscate:I was in Nawlins a year after Katrina. I was sleeping on the floor by a patio door and when I woke up a very large raptor flew right up to the door to one side and grabbed a rodent, an incredible sight to wake to. :-) The bird was at least 16-18" in height, was mixed colors of brown mostly darker(almost black) with a quarter mid browns a little light brown/white in trim. When it launched upwards there was alot more lighter color in the wings seen from below. I know our birds here in  western Canada and it wasn't one I'm familiar with. It was definately way larger than a hawk or falcon. Could it have been an immature eagle? Or a small adult? Wasn't an immature bald eagle I'm used to seeing them. Perhaps you can identify it? Thanks Rob

Maybe the bear had crohns and was avoiding seeds in the tomato? Wouldn't be as bad for a bear with crohns, it wouldn't need to look for a bathroom, just go anywhere, whose gonna stop it? tongue

Grandpato, you said a year after Katrina but not what time of year. The large hawks such as red tails come down in the fall and leave in spring here so odds are it was not a large hawk. Sense you know what an immature bald eagle looks like and by the size you speak of I would have to say it was an Osprey. Though they eat mostly fish I have seen them take rabbit. My best guess anyway.
Lyn, sounds like a good idea, buy ,then you will have to deal with another type of stinker ...

Ok it was early Nov. I'm familiar with red tails and they are too small and the browns I saw were much darker than a red tails. I'm very familiar with ospreys as well. The white I saw especially under the wings was way less than an osprey has. Our osprey's are black and white. Do yours have brown? Because that's more like the size of bird I saw. No big deal except it started a spiritual experience that floored me and I still remember vividly to this day.

Osprey here are brown with white faces and a distinct brown blaze from there eye to the back of their head. Underside is white except in juvenile where the throat is brown. A golden eagle would be rare indeed here and the bald eagle is the only eagle we have on a regular basis . We do have some odd cases of rare species that migrate through from time to time . Perhaps you did see the phoenix .

Nanners, you have to be able to talk to the snakes. When I find one in my garage I tell them ,"hey you know your not suppose to be in here." " Oh , wow you look dangerous all coiled up that way." Let me introduce you to mr shovel." "This is going to hurt you more than it hurts me. " Now , we will take you back to the bayou so you can visit with our little friends,,,the crabs." Works every time. Now when you lift the lid to the barbie and find one there a great big smile , an expletive and a quick exit works best. Same thing when you find one under the patio cushion. I find those grabber things we use to pick stuff up off the floor work well for the small ones . Just grab him by the head and place him in a safer place , but when you find a large one its shovel or hoe time. Call it a hoe down if you will. Now I know there are a few true animal lovers here that would rather see me let them go , but , you know, crabs and gators need to eat too...I know old Steve Erwin would have said, Ohhhh isn't she a beauty and all that but he was being paid to film them and I'm not. Plus one too close incounter with one of mother natures critters did him in. I'm a live and let live guy. I live here, snakes go live somewhere else. By the way, I only kill the ones that can kill me. Part of living here is knowing the poisonous ones from the harmless ones...

I finally went to Chapters and looked through the National Geographic Complete Birds of North America. I thought I knew raptors obviously I have more to learn! lol I believe you were right It was a red tailed hawk, specifically a Harlan's Red Tail. The small amount of white was what through me. The adult is very dark brown and from underneath only half the wing feathers are white. It doesn't present the classic red tail but a whitish brown tail instead. What clinched it in my mind was the slow heavy wing beats that I remember as it flew away. Apparently this bird lives all over North America but this was the first I've seen. Very magestic bird for sure, thanks for your help that was fun. Rob

I look forward to their return each year Grandpato. That and early spring when the baby owls come out and sit on branches to be fed. They are all white fluff at that time and the mom has her hands full if she has about four of them. Guess thats why I love this place so. If you take the time and just sit and watch there is a whole new world to see and learn about. I am so lucky to live where its still wild enough that my yard is a playground for natures little wonders. Yes I have to dispatch an occasional dangerous critter but all in all its wonderful. Sunup or sundown , there is always something to see and enjoy.

sniper i cant believ you didnt use the old "kill'em all and let god sort 'em out" for the snakes! i got snake bit in texas during training and i hate'em all! spent the night before graduation in the ICU and FT.Sam Houston. barely made it back for the ceremony. my buddies in camp threw everythingi had in my foot locker into my duffle bag except my blues. and my airplane ticket. ah, the good old days! i could handle all the critters but the bugs, thats my weakness.
