I was not improving so doc switched me from Pentassa to Apriso. I looked up Apriso and it says that is a UC drug but sometimes prescribed "off-label" for CD. Has anyone has success with this? It does not seem to be working for me.

BTW, I am doing the pill cam to get more info. Doc did mention that I might have UC also.
Any feedback on Apriso would be appreciated. It seems like the doc is not sure and continues to test and try different meds without a clear understanding. Or maybe it is my impatience and this is normal...
Cheers

David

My Dr gave me some samples of Apriso. It is in the 5-ASA catagory and is formulated alot like Asacol. I can't tolerate Asacaol at all, but tolerated the Apriso a little better. Like any drug, they work for some people and not for others. The Dr won't know if it works for you until you take it for a while and see if it helps. I know how frustrating it can be to have to keep switching meds, all the while continuing to have symptoms. There is no magic pill that works for everyone. It's a matter of trial and error, so try to be patient. It's hard, but hopefully you will find the one that works for you soon. Good luck!
Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 13. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistula's, perianal and perivaginal.

Humira, probiotic, a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and fish oil. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

Thanks for your insight

I bet the lack of responses indicates, most folks have not taken this, so can not provide insight.

Apriso, Pentasa, and all the other meds in the class of 5-ASAs are of questionable benefit in Crohn's disease - hence the lack of FDA approval and the need to take them "off-label." Yes, some people will swear by them, but research shows they're of little benefit. It might be that they do help a small portion of people, but overall, the results of these meds are far poorer than the results of meds such as imuran, 6mp, remicade, humira, etc.

But my understanding is that the reation is much less also...right? so if they work, a person is really lucky.

What is wierd for me and what I can not quite figure out is why my doc is surpised they are not working. It would be the exception if they worked.

Any how, pill cam results next week and keeping on with the SCD until I can figure out a better plan. I am so hoping that the pill cam results will finally give me detailed answers to what is going on, so i can move to a focused treament phase. (sorry to whine)

Thank you

Maybe your Doc has patients who have had success with Apriso, Asacol, Pentasa or one of the others which is why he is surprised it's not helping you. All docs have their 'favorite' meds that they like to prescribe and this may be one of his. I've had crohn's over 30 years and have never had any luck with any of the 5-ASAs. The only thing that has ever worked for me consistently is Prednisone, but I think now that I'm older, I have alot more damage and I haven't been in remission for over 6 years.
I just started taking Humira so I'm hoping that it will finally get me back in remission.

Good luck on your pill cam, and don't worry about whining...we've all done it at one time or another and you are among people who have been where you are at. wink
