So I'm ridin my scooter to my friends house and the speed limit is 65, its four lanes , Im doing 63 because I dont want trouble. All of a sudden there is a pickup on my tail close enough that I can see the bugs on the bumper and as you may know scooter mirrors say objects may be closer than they appear. There is no one on the hwy but us two and no one in the left lane. Why this guy is being the north end of a south bound horse, I'll never know . So I speed up to 65 but this guy stays right on my six. Many many years ago, when I was sort of a rebel, sheepish grin , I would have pulled out my pack of copper heads and poured about a half pack between my leg and the tank and then later , if he was still crowding me I would have moved my leg and let him have a hail storm of BB's . At 65 mph that gets attention in a hurry, but I dont carry BB's anymore so I just started slowing down untill we were doing about 50. Thats when he whipped into the left lane and passed me. Good I said to myself but about then he pulled sharply in front of me and made an obscene gesture to me in his rear glass. Welllll, I thought about letting it slide but he started to slow down and lookin back and I grabbed a hand full of throttle leaned left and in about two heart beats I was right beside his drivers window. I gave him a good once over and then smiled the biggest smile I could, revved my engine and gave him a sideways glance . He floored that Dodge. Even though he had a hemi, he pulled away like a snail . I got a little more throttle , just enough to make him think he had a chance,,because ,, after riding this road for all my life I have learned a few things, like, where and when most cops set up and we were about a mile away from one of the most used places so I stayed neck and neck with him till we were about a quarter mile from one of the most likely spot ,then I left him in the dust. I was just going up an overpass when I backed off , drop down a few gears and never touched the brakes until he shot pass me like a bullet and flew over the overpass. I was doing 95 and by the time I crested the overpass I was doing 60 and there he was being flagged over by the cops. Oh yes , I did wave to him as I rode past. Big grin... Sometimes there is justice.....I suppose that ticket cost him a few hundred bucks and was not his first but I sure felt good about it. What do you guys think ? Should I be ashamed of myself ?

No shame-you did not force him to go 90 that was his choice.

Sniper, I think you did good.

about two years while back in the USA (I'm now in Taiwan), I experienced a road rage incident too. Wish I could have "pulled a Sniper," but no such luck. In my case, all I did was stop for a traffic light. The light had gone yellow, and was about to turn red, so I slowed down and stopped. There was a soldier (in uniform) right behind me on a motorcycle, riding my bumper. I stopped very gradually, because if I had hit the brakes hard, he probably would have rear-ended me - he was that close. Anyway, I stop, he stops, doesn't seem to me like there's any problem. But he gets off the bike, walks up to my window (which was rolled down, as it was a hot day), and starts screaming threats and obscenities. My "crime" was that I didn't floor it and try to run through the yellow-red light, which is what he intended to do. He stood there screaming, raving, while I ignored him, about one full minute until the light turned green and I drove off. I wondered if he would try to follow me, but he didn't, and instead hung a turn at the nearby VA hospital.

Makes me wonder if he was one of those returning soldiers with post-traumatic stress syndrome. He seemed to be totally out of his mind. I sympathize with people who have been to war, but I do think that some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive. Not easy to know who though, is it?

I wanna know what kind of scooter goes 90mph!!!!
I ride a sportbike and people behave like idiots and I almost get run over like every day. As much as I want to screw with them, kick their mirrors off etc, it's just not worth it. You may lose in the end.

Tailgaters deserve what ever they get. Unfortunately they'll be doing the same thing tomorrow. I can't stand them and I drive a car thats much more protection than a bike. I've spent 4 months in a wheel chair from a previous accident and it scares me that a tailgater could esally put me back in one for the rest of my life. Thanks for the great story you made me smile, again!

Brian84, I ride a Harley superglide. I've made some modifications though, guess I like to be able to get out of trouble faster than I get into it. She can easily do over 100 , but I'm really not into that. I use to race bikes when I was a youngster and I think I have out grown the need for speed. I guess the thing that really made me mess with this guy is the fact that he could have passed me anytime. There was no traffic at all , a straight freeway and a free left lane . I just dont know what his problem was. If I had been holding him up in some way, maybe I would understand. I almost stopped when the cop pulled him over just to see but I was feeling like I needed to get out of Dodge about then. I started riding scooters, (thats what I call them ) when I was 10. Back in the early 60s the cops would do a u turn anytime they saw a bike and pull you over to check your papers. I think they just liked to mess with us. Even though I was legal I would take to the cane fields just to avoid the harassment. Things have come a long way to today but I still feel like some people just dont want to share the road. I feel I have payed my dues, and just want to be able to ride free of that old harassed feeling. Maybe I suffer from the old , Easy Rider syndrome...

I talked to a friend of mine this morning. He is an assistant DA. He told me that depending on how fast the guy was clocked , like 20 or more mph over the posted speed limit, they may have taken him to jail. He may have his license suspended and the fines are heavy. I'm sure he is blaming me for anything that happens to him. All I can say about that is, If you cant pay the fine, stay off my behind ...I been a bad badddddddd boy .......

ozonehole,
It is the norm in O E F & O I F to run the street signs/lights/etc., because that is where there have been ambushes. It is really hard to stop doing that in the states. Yes, I think if he got off his bike to yell at you about it is safe to assume it was an issue of PTSD, and not about you. Not that it excuses the behavior, but I understand the reasoning behind it. I am sorry you had to deal with that.
Take Care,

Sniper-I also ride a Harley Superglide, an '01. Feel no shame, my friend. People who tailgate scoots deserve what they get. I ride in Vegas, and it always amazes me that people have no respect for people on bikes. Getting from point A to point B can be a death defying experience.

I have used the BB trick.... blush   It wasn't nice, but the jerk got the point.
Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 13. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistula's, perianal and perivaginal.

Humira, probiotic, a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and fish oil. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

grayeyedblond, Just as Rodney Dangerfield said, I tell you, I dont get no respect..I never could figure out why people do some of the things they do to motorcycle riders, and I have been riding a long long time. Maybe they have watched too many biker movies , or they feel superior in their bigger vehicles. Mostly I think its ignorance. With the price of gas and the cost of vehicle maintenance maybe more people should be on two wheels . When I see Joe Shmow pump $70 + into his Hummer and I put $10 in my bike , Hey , whos the dummy ?????
