ok so i ended up in the er sun morning because the pain has been absolutely unbearable when i have had to go to the bathroom.  the pain is centered in the area below my belly button and is so bad it makes me puke.  i also thought i was anemic bc i have been bleeding lately but my count was actually higher than a few weeks ago.  anyway they gave me morphine and some percocets to take home.  ct scan showed no blockage so i'm not sure what's going on...only that it's insane pain.  going to call my gi tomorrow of course but not sure what he's going to be able to do...any one with similar "episodes?"  i guess i'm just going to ask if he is ok with putting me on pain meds for a while until my body figures this one out...

It sounds like you might have had at least a partial obstruction. When I get obstruction pain it is a pain that comes in waves much like labor pains. You can't burp, fart or have a bm. Although with a partial obstruction you may have some diarrhea. Eventually I will get nauseous and then start vomiting.

But with the CT scan being clear, I am not sure what is happening with you. Maybe some inflammation going on?? I would talk more about with your doctor. Good luck!

I have had that quite a bit - pain during BMs that actually makes me vomit and I end up super shaky. My Crohn's is mostly in the rectal area. Even with rectal steroids, I hurt really badly when I go to the bathroom. It's enough to make me cry out and puke at times. I've been a bit better the past couple of months, but it still hurts like heck. I don't think mine is an obstruction given the location of my inflammation. But, I know the inflammation makes it so hard to go sometimes. I dread it...

Good luck figuring it out! And, I hope it gets better!

so went to the doc today- almost broker down crying when describing the past week and a half (totally not normal for me)...the pain is so bad...he's concerned the remicade is not kicking in and is referring me to Mayo to a couple of guys "who see the toughest cases"...we'll see...i was devistated though when i asked him for something for the pain and he said no way- they NEVER prescribe pain meds...and that was it...so now i have to find a new primary care doc (my retired or something) and the 1st thing i am going to appear like a junkie...even though in suffering with CD for 22 years this is the first time i have ever asked for pain meds. i'm so upset right now...maybe have to go to mexico or something. this sucks big time.

Depending on your insurance you don't have to wait for your doctor to refer you to Mayo - you can make the call yourself. I'm sick to death of these doctors that have this thing about pain meds. I've told my GI, rheumotologist and primary that it's 2010 and I'm not about to live in pain - whether it's crohns or any other kind of pain. Some of these people either went to a med school in the third world or graduated at the bottom of their class and were absent on the day they taught about pain management and what constitutes REAL misuse of pain meds.

You should be able to take your hospital sheet that shows what you were there for and the suggested followup care and that you received pain meds from the hospital to a primary care of pain management doc and be able to get a refill on them. From what other people on here have said, a pain management doctor is the way to go.
Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 13. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistula's, perianal and perivaginal.

Humira, probiotic, a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and fish oil. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

I thought I replied to this thread, sorry.

Do we even have a Mayo here in AZ?  The no pain med thing seems ludicrous.  But then again most pain meds cause lots of tummy problems.  I would like ot know how it turns out for you.

I've commented on this several time too. It is sad that people in need are treated like drug-seekers for pain meds. You know, there was a time you could basically look at a person and tell if he/she was a junkie. Now, it seems they can look darn good and be addicted. Hey, maybe that's the key, I know I look like s--t most of the time, so if more docs had my way of thinking, we sick folks could get the meds we need. I have been to the ER before and asked for a shot for pain and they gave it to me. If you have a confirmed case of IBD or another painful, chronic condition, what is the problem?????? It really touches a nerve with me and I rarely need to take pain meds, thank God, but when I need them, I want access. I haven't had to ask for any b/c I had to get 2 root canals in the past year and got pain pills filled for that and only took a little bit, so I have them left over. It will probably take me another year if I don't have any major flare ups. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone on the pain issue.

yes- there is both a mayo clinic in scottsdale and a mayo hospital near desert ridge in n. phoenix.  i'm going to go see them- unfortunately my ins won't cover it so it's cash- oh well...can't put a price on your health right?

yeah the pain thing is unreal- the fact that drs. would rather have a patient suffer when a condition is well documented amazes me.  it's not like i feel great and am looking for a "high" or something...in fact the low doses of percocets that i've been given for my kidney stones don't even make me feel any different other than dulling the pain a bit- doesn't even fully take it away...

i guess if people are abusing the more potent painkillers there could be an issue, but with real medical conditions and REAL PAIN there should be NO ISSUE.  i made an appt at a pain clinic but it's going to take about 10 days to get in there...

Mtgman, everything you are saying sounds JUST like where I have been this year including crying and being afraid of being called a junkie. I've had CD since 1975 and never taken pain meds until this year. No puking for me though. The fact that you gained weight back is a really good sign.

ARE YOU CAREFUL about WHAT YOU EAT? Things like beans or soy or onions could hurt pretty bad while the remicade (you had your third infusion about two weeks ago IIRC?) is starting to work.

When your pain level is that high you will likely need percocet or better. For me the vicodin was a waste of time.

Don't just allow the pain meds to cover what is going on and endure it.  Try to find out what is happening to you.  As I said before; i was told to allow 6 months for the Remicade to work.

thanks! you guys are awesome! sometimes i don't know what i'd do without this site. if i ever win powerball i'm flying everyone into AZ to meet you all personally!!
i went to a new primary care doc today (that my GI recommended)...he was awesome- told him what was going on and that i had an appt set with a pain mgmt clinic on the 16th and he asked if i had enough pain meds to get me through- i told him i hated asking on my 1st visit but said i'd really appreciate some- no problem!!! so i'm set until i see the pain doc. i'm so thankful! especially since i was feeling kind of good yesterday and got stupid and ate a lot! pid for it- pain was HORRIBLE! puked 2 times last night and then again in the am before work...got to remember to take the meds regualarly right now bc if they wear off totally i'm screwed next time i have to poop. oh well i'll keep you all posted with what the pain doc says...someone also suggested accupuncture- anyone try it? i think i'll start another thread.

so- good appt at the pain clinic today-- man that place was busy- felt like i was at the dept. of motor vehicles! pain is a great biz i guess!
anyway doc was very empathetic- treats a bunch of crohn's patients and understands...
prescribed percocets and i'm going to get a celiac plexus block- says a lot of his crohn's patients see a lot of relief from the pain...
had to take a drug test and sign my life away from the prescription but i understand...
hope the shot works!

Oooh, I saw a celiac plexus block done once...absolutely fascinating to watch! (sorry, I work in xray and I get excited about stuff like that) I hope it gives you lots of relief and pain free days!

I just developed an allergy to darvocet and percocet and am going to try to get my dr to "swap out" those for lortab...seriously, I'll drop off the old meds at his office if he wants...I just hope he goes for it. Such a pain to have to worry about having pain meds on hand just in case, or when you need them. (I'm going on a trip for 7 days 13 hours away and wouldn't go without having my pharmacy with me in case I need anything). Though my crohn's isn't severe, I do have bad days that I take pain meds, but they were prescribed when I had blood clots, so I don't know what I'll do when those run out. My GI also does not prescribe anything stronger than darvocet.

i nkow what you mean- we're going away thurs and i was freaking out because my primary care doc gave me some percocets to get me thorugh to the appt today...if the doc today hadn't been so cool i may have been cancelling my trip. the only that is going to suck with the shot is my ins doesn't cover sedation for this procedure so i have to do it with a local only- doc gave me some super xanax to take prior...hope it doesn't hurt so bad.

with all of the time i've spent in doc's offices etc. i really wish i had done what i wanted to in college and had gone to med school. i was thinking about going and studying radiology- e ray tech- but the wait for some schools here in az is years...crazy!

Insurance doesn't cover sedation AT ALL?? Or they don't completely cover it. I definitely would want to be asleep for that procedure, having seen it done on another person. I guess if I'd never seen it done I could have it done without sedation, but I know WAY too much about medical stuff and I'd be anxious.

I would just worry that I'd spasm and move while they were doing it...that's all my worry would be. Like they said, they'll numb ya...hopefully they're liberal with numbing meds! I had a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and my back spasmed when they were doing it. It didn't hurt though! I was really drugged when they did it, and I was trying to hold really still, but i flinched I guess. BUT, that being said, I was sitting, and I'm pretty sure they'll do your procedure with you laying on your belly (or at least that's how I saw it done), so with the meds, you should be able to relax and just lay there.

When I saw it, they were doing it on a girl who had bad kidney stones and lots of pain from them, so hopefully it'll help you with that as well...treat 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak!

from what the doc told me not at all...he gave me a script for a ton of xanax to take- i already have a script for .25 mg. he wrote me one for 1 mg tabs and told me to take 2 maybe 3 if needed prior to the procedure. i'm a bit scared but honestly it cannot possibly hurt worse than the pain im in daily right now and if it works i will be overcome with joy. i've never felt worse pain than i've been in...we're on vacation right now and i'm having trouble enjoying myself. sucks.
