Ok, so my current GI, who I really like, wants to do a colonoscopy, but she's outside of the hospital I used to work for and have insurance through, so the copay is $900 for her vs $200 for a dr within the hospital...so I'm trying to see my old GI just to get him to do a colonoscopy. I trust him to do the colonoscopy. Out of all the GI's at the hospital, I trust him the most. I know of others who have more difficulty doing scopes and have tract records of not medicating their patients enough, so I trust him for the procedure (it's good to work in a hospital because you learn things like this!!)

I'm nervous about seeing him and having to explain why I switched doctors though. In reality I switched because he wasn't using newer and better medicines and I was having obstructions every 2-4 months and being hospitalized. He only had me on Pentasa, and it just wasn't preventing the obstructions. I felt like he didn't want to try anything different because of the risk...and because technically I didn't have severe disease going on, but had a stricture and it caused obstructions. He didn't think I should try stronger and newer meds because he felt like they should be held out for if my disease got more severe. When I switched GIs she put me on Remicade, then we switched to Humira since she's quite a drive from my home and the infusions were difficult to schedule, and I haven't had an obstruction in over 2 years.

I called the old GI's office and explained the financial situation, and that I have another GI but need to see if he can do a colonoscopy, and I have an office visit with him next week.

What do you think I should say to explain why I switched doctors but want his services for this?? I'm thinking about just saying that I felt more comfortable with a female doctor, and not mentioning at all about medicines or things like that. What do you think?

Oh, I might also mention-I did talk to my current dr and she doesn't like the thought of her not being the one to do the scope, but it's either have another dr do it, or not have it done until I have a job...which could take some time. I haven't told her yet that I have an appointment with another GI. I figure I'll meet with him first then deal with her...one thing at a time!!

((Sorry this is kinda lengthy, but I'm nervous and tend to babble when nervous))

It is quite likely that you won't be asked where you've been or why. And I certainly wouldn't volunteer any information that isn't asked for.

I had to go back to an old doctor once, and I just told him that the new doctor fit my situation better.  That's all that was said about the matter.

I'd caution that you make sure your current doctor supports the decision to have someone else do the scope.  I've had a few GIs who just refuse to accept the colonoscopy results provided by someone else and push to do one themselves.  I always refuse, but the tension is there.

I see it this way...either I have another doctor do the colonoscopy, or I probably wouldn't have one done for another year. It's in MY best interest to have one done. The problem is that my current GI probably would like to bill and be paid for one...they've said they can work out a payment plan, but not having a job that doesn't help. I have no income.

I do plan on meeting with my old GI, then talking with my current one before actually going through it. I'll just explain that working out a payment plan without having income does me no good, and it's either go with him, or not have it done at all. Of course I wouldn't be rude, just try to explain that paying $700 extra to have something done when I have NO money is not feasable.

Oh, I understand completely, and I empathize.  You mentioned that your new doctor doesn't like the idea of someone else doing the scope.  Been there, done that!

The way the medical assistant phrased it was "she would prefer that she be the one to do the colonoscopy since she's the one who is currently prescibing your medicines"
It kinda leads me to think that she won't really like it, but knows I have to do what I have to do.

Ok, so I went and saw the "old" GI today and he's agreed to do a colonoscopy. He didn't even ask why I switched doctors. I called my current GI and left a message, and the medical assistant called back and said just to schedule a follow up appointment with her after the colonoscopy. She sounded really understanding, and I think she understands that it's entirely a financial decision. She will accept his results and I'll just go see her to see if anything needs to change. I guess I was worried about nothing. No attitudes from either doctor!!

Now...I'm just nervous about the colonoscopy because of my history of clots (had blood clots go to my lungs last October). He'll do biopsies as usual, and I'm scared it'll cause clots that will again go to my lungs. They never figured out where exactly the clots came from, so I just worry that biopsies will cause them. I haven't had any medical procedures since having the blood clots, so....I'm really scared. Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing, but it's hard to put the worries in the back of my mind.

Have you ever been tested for a blood clotting factor?? There is at least one genetic factor making one prone to clots.

I've had the bloodwork done, and I don't have any other risk factors (aside from CD). They think the clots were from a combination of CD and birth control.
