Well I live in the San Diego area, and believe it or not I am not much of a beach person:) But Coronado State Beach just recently made the best beach list. At most of the beaches there are public bathrooms around. You just have to find them and try to find a spot near them. I hope you have a good time. In June we are known to have what we call June Gloom, which means that sometimes its really overcast especially in the coastal regions. But by early July things start improving. But.....there are sunny days too in there. Have fun!

Oh and Seaworld is awesome. I love that place. You should take her to the zoo too, its world reknown, its really nice. We also have the Wild Animal Park, and Legoland you can visit too.

My parents live in Coronado -- it really is a very nice beach and sweet little beach town. I'm not sure about public bathrooms for the beach but the Hotel Del Coronado has nice public restrooms in their lower level shopping court -- you don't need to go into hotel lobby to access them.

Don't be tempted to go across the border - even with a tour group. The situation there has really deteriorated safety and health-wise.

If you want some "Mexico" -- go to Old Town San Diego .. very pleasant to walk around, public restrooms OK.

I respectfully disagree with you Glowmoment, I travel to Mexico quite frequently, and it is safe to visit. JMHO

Nanners - we actually agree more than you think. I love Mexico and do go frequently. But, the town just over the border (Tijuana) is not in a good phase right now IMHO. Even I (who have been multiple times and speak some Spanish) wouldn't choose it at the moment. Baja, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta & other areas are divine, friendly and safe. I didn' t mean to speak poorly of a whole nation -- just that one town catering to SD tourists and struggling with crime. But of course, many do go and do OK. Cheers,

Glow I am in TJ very frequently and never have issues. The US press likes to blow stories of TJ out of proportion. If you are not part of the drug cartels you have nothing to worry about. I shop here frequently, eat here frequently and never have issues. People just have to be responsible and stay in the tourist areas and they will have a great time. JMHO

PS Married to a wonderful Mexican man and have come to love the country very much. I will even be retiring in the Guadalajara area when the time comes.

TJ was one of the highlights of my San Diego trips years ago! Hey Nanners, do you eat the food in Mexico? I've visited a bunch of Mexico border towns but have never brought myself to risk trying food prepared there since a friend got Montezuma's revenge bad when we were in TJ.

if you go to mexico, drive like 4 hours down (get outside ensenada) and then think about stopping. i eat in mexico and i'm fine. drink beer not water when there as it is pasteurized. most of the problem and stigma in mexico is at the border towns.

as for beaches in san diego, you have bathrooms at del mar at 15th st by the life guard tower, la jolla shores has some and free parking (very rare in san diego). state parks like torrey pines, san elijo, and carlsbad have bathrooms, but those are like $15 day use, but that includes parking. you can also find them by the pier in oceanside. but you are pretty much on your own in point loma. ocean beach and pacific beach can be cool, but may not be the best for families, especially those with young ones but that is family specific.

La Jolla shores is nice! Hopefully when you come this yucky June gloom will be gone. June gloom means it overcast at the beaches. And beware our beach water is COLD. Have fun!

the water is just now starting to warm up - today it was 62-64 degrees. the kids can handle it but i dont go in without a wetsuit, but then i'll be out for a few hours surfing.

la jolla shores is very family friendly but gets crowded fast on the weekends so get there EARLY to get parking. there are a few places to eat a few blocks off the beach in the south-east direction so if you didnt bring food you dont necessarily have to leave. check out prospect street at night - lots of cool places to eat at and art galleries.

glad you are having a good time. i live at the back end of la jolla to facilitate the ease of coming and going, and now you know why. if you come back for a month, try august or september as those are some of the best months weather wise and the ocean will be warmer.
