Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether Crohn's disease precludes you from being an organ donor in Australia? I have been trying to find an answer and cannot.

No idea Aislin but it's a good question. I will ask my specialist next week as he's based at a Hospital and may know.

I am not in Australia, but in the US, and I am on the organ donation list. They can still donate skin, eyes etc., maybe just not other parts.

I think it may depend on whether you've been on toxic medications like methotrexate or not.

I am Australian and am on the list. My reasoning is that, by being on the list, I give the doctors the option of deciding whether or not I'm a good donor when I do die. If I don't join the donor register, that decision will be even harder for them.

When push comes to shove, we'll be dead; it's not going to bother us one way or another at that point. By joining the registry, we've done all we can :-).

I'm of the same mind frame Ivy, I'm on the list and it's not like i'll be needing anything once I'm gone. I've also made sure my family know I want to be a donor. The waiting lists here in Australia are terrible and if I can save someone's life then I'll die a happy person.

Good question. I was wondering about this recently. Donating blood is a definite no-no for me - too underweight, too anaemic - but if my organs are of any use then I'm happy to give them over after I die. I used to have an aversion against the idea, but it's silly: it's not like my body will even survive death intact because I'll be cremated rather than buried.

If I remember I will ask my GP about this at the next consultation. I've already let my family know my wishes, but I'm not on any formal register.
