I think its to get more medicine into your system initially so your body will begin the healing process. Then you get your regular dosages every 6 or 8 weeks to maintain. This is just a guess tho.
Current meds:  Remicade
Tried:  Prednisone, sulfasalzine, lialda, antibiotics, imuran

Double dose didn't work for me, had a flare up couple days after the infusion. Keep an eye on your flare ups if you keep having them after remicade it means that is not working.

Remicade is not a quick fix medication, it is a maintenance med. Some see some quick results but it usually takes about4-6 doses after your loading doses before you see the max help. Viv1123, what do you mean by a double dose? Are you talking about the 10 dose instead of the 5? I receive mine every for weeks at the max dose of 10 per and it has been good. I still have flares because I am not in remission but I quit remicade once when I did not think it was working and soon realized how much it was helping. This medicine works slowly sometimes and that is why they start you on the loading doses, to keep a steady supply of the med in your bloodstream.

I can't remember the exact stats for Remicade, but I seem to remember for Humira that they tested the drug at various doses and various dosing regimes, and simply found that the loading doses provided the best results for people with Crohn's.

The drug is given differently depending on the disease: each trial worked to find the dose and dosing regimen that would provide the best outcome for patients with each illness. I believe, too, that they also did trials to discover whether it was best to inject or infuse, or administer the drug by some other means.

If you ask your doctor or nurse there might be information on how Remicade (aka Infliximab) was developed and tested. You could also try Googling

infliximab trials "loading dose" regimen crohn's

and garner some information that way.

I hope this helps. Remember, I'm writing from memory and am not a scientist, so please don't take what I say as 100% accurate. It's how I understand things, though.
