I was just put on 6mp yesterday at 50mg once a day. I was told I need to have blood work done once a week. Is that normal to have it done that often? Seems like a lot to me and it's not covered by my insurance so each week it will be around $58. Would be more but my insurance pays some of it. Also I've been on prednisone for awhile now and have had awful side effects. I was told I won't have any side effects being on 6mp is that true? My GI is hoping once I've been on the 6mp for awhile he will take me off the prednisone for good. I was just curious what others have noticed when being on the 6mp. I can't really deal with anymore side effects as the prednisone causes plenty for me. Thanks!!

I initially had blood work done every few weeks, but they decreased the frequency after a few times.  I never noticed any side effects but it also didn't help any.  I frequently had high liver enzymes which the dr. suspected was caused by the 6mp and we stopped it after about a year, since it didn't help any and probably raised my enzymes.  I hope it works better for you!

The blood tests should only be weekly for the first few weeks, then you can go to every couple of weeks, and after a few months, you can go to monthly or even to every two or three months.

As for side effects, ideally you won't have any, and that is true for lots of people who take this med with good results. But some people do have side effects, so you really won't know until you've given it some time.

I've been on 6MP for over 12 years. You should only need the weekly blood draws for a short time then you will be switched to once a month or so, then on to every 3 months to every 6 months. Keeping up with the blood work is very important because 6MP can do some damage to your liver. Also you want to have your blood sent to Prometheus labs at some point to make sure that you are at the therapeutic level. You can have your doctor petition your insurance company to have them cover this, it is not always covered, but if you dispute it, usually you can get them to change their decision. If 6MP works for you, you may be able to get off the prednisone. I have not been able to get off entirely, but I have been able to get to a low enough dose so that I don't have any side effects from the prednisone.

By the way, love your name. I'm a life long Red Sox Fan!!!

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

Thanks for sharing all of this info with me! My doctor didn't go into too much detail so was just curious. I see him in a month so I'm guessing he was going to tell me then that I can now have blood work done once a month or whatever he decides. Thanks again!

Suzanne, glad you're a Sox fan! Watching gameday live now and waiting for the game to start! GO SOX!
