I think this depends on your doctor's understanding of how you're progressing, how well you're responding to the Rem, and how well you're healing internally; things like that.

I was only on Remicade for Crohn's for a while and it got me into Remission.  I was on other stuff for acid reflux and thyroid problems, but nothing else for the Crohn's.

Crohn's Disease, Acid Reflux/Gastritis, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Endometriosis, Arthritis, Depression/Anxiety.  Too many meds to list them all.  =)

I used Remi alone for 8 months. The response was fine, but not bright. Kept having flares.

Then the Doc combined it with Imuran and the response was very good. I'm not "perfect", but improved a lot.

For the 7 years my Daughter has been taking Remicade she also has been on Imuran and Asacol.
Some patients use Remicade and something else like Imuran or 6MP and other patients do the Remicade solo. I've been under the impression that using Remicade with one of the other mentioned meds boosts the effectiveness of Remicade. Guess it all depends on the patient's disease or the GI's decision to do solo Remicade or add a backup med to it.

Not sure it would be better to use it with Pred. Remicade is what finally got my Daughter weaned off of the dreaded Pred.

They started me on Imuran last April, went for second opinion, they got me on Remicade also in August; good thing because liver tests got elevated from Imuran and had to stop suddenly. Have been on Remicade alone since August and feel much better! It has kept me out of the ER! Better to not be on Pred if you can be controlled by other meds..

It is probably more common to use Remicade alone than with another maintenance med. I have done it both ways and with many different combinations. The only time that I ever mixed steroids with Remicade is when I was really flaring bad and needed a little boost to get the pain tolerable. The most common medications that are used in combination are methotrexate or 6 mp(mercaptapurine). The are generally used when you are on a higher dose of Remicade and are starting to build up a resistance to it due to antibodies. As for other medications I would be willing to be that everyone on Remicade uses some type of symptomatic medication to help with pain, D, or nausea. Since going back on Remicade after my cimzia hiatus, I am now only using stronger premeds before my infusion and symptomatic meds.
