Hey everyone. I'm going in for a colonoscopy in a few weeks and GI wants me to take Movi-Prep to clear my guts. I'm SO not good about having to drink stuff. I'm afraid I'm going to puke it all up. It says I have to drink 8oz every 15 minutes for an hour on the day before the test. Then I have to do that AGAIN 4 hours before the test. I don't know if I can do this.

Have any of you ever had to take it? What does it taste like? Do you have any tips to make it go down easier? TIA

Yes. It was the WORST day of my life. None of the suggestions you'll receive on here are going to make it any less nasty. You can mix it with sprite, gatorade, just not the red or grape i believe. I did puke it up...there's just no way I was able to get all that stuff down. As soon as I started pooping mostly clear fluids, I stopped. I told myself there was no way I was getting another drop of that in me! Told the doc if he had to, he'd have to work "around" the leftovers! In all honesty, it is important to clean yourself out as much as possible so they can really see what's going on in there. Hold your nose and chug! Let us know how it goes!
Pentasa- 4 g q day; 1/08; Percocet
Remicade 1st infusion 7/24/08
Ultram ER 200mg; omeprazole 40mg; Xanax-ANXIETY; Effexor ER 150 mg
Hope this clears up soon, I want to start having babies!

I read on here before my last colonoscopy that sipping slowly through a straw after refridgeration was the best way, but it was dreadful. I managed to get the entire prep down by refridgerating it, then chugging QUICKLY through a straw, as much as I could manage, then chasing it all down with Sprite to get rid of the immediate taste.

Good luck!

My GI just moved to this prep and honestly, it's the FIRST time I've finished the entire prep. I usually puke it up. Since it was so much less liquid, and it was split up, I could coach myself through it. I mixed it early so it was cold and used one of the flavorings it came with. None of it tastes good. I poured a big glass, grabbed a straw, and stood at the counter in my kitchen and just sucked it down.

Rinsed my mouth out and sat down for 15 minutes. Repeat.

It really didn't take long at all and you finish drinking before you start heading to the bathroom.

Next morning, did the same strategy. I never want to try the big jug in one night prep again!

Whoa, I'm glad I can be more positive than the above posters.

I have done this prep and didn't find it nearly as bad as everyone else. I am a hugely picky eater, can't stand gross tastes, etc, and I didn't think it was that bad.

My hints:
-mix it with orange powder.
-refrigerate it and drink it with a straw
-have a lollipop (not red) to lick in between sips
-eat really lightly the day before and only liquid the day of. that way you'll have less to poop out and as SOON as your poop is see through (even if it's yellow/there's little bits of real poo in it), you can stop. you don't have to drink all of it.

It's not as bad as these folk are saying.

I just sipped each litre of prep (MoviPrep, btw) very, very slowly, taking 2 hours each time. You don't have to drink it as fast as it says on the packet. It is tedious, but that way you lower the risk of chucking it all back up. Also, it tastes marginally less disgusting that way.

Next time I might try using a straw, eating a lollipop in between, etc. Try not to dread it; it's not exactly a lovely experience, but it's not quite as bad as some folks make out. I sat at the PC while I drank my prep, and just took a sip whenever I remembered.

I hated it, just refridgerate it, and try to eat a lot less before hand so you don't have as much to get out, I actually think the split 4hr/4hr thing is worse than the last one I had. The first one was okay, yeah it was nasty but it was fine, but the morning of 4 hr one, I hadn't had ANY sleep that night from going to the bathroom, I was exhausted, and nauseus, it felt like forever getting the 2nd one down, sipping through a straw and everything, i couldn't even chug it since I was so nauseus, I would try to chug and then puke it up, so I had to sip very slowly, it took me longer than the thing said too, and your supposed to drink another glass of water afterwards, which I ended pukinmg that up too.
Any way you do it, it's gonna suck...but they always do.....
I heard they have pills now...I sooo want to do those next time....

I thought Movi-Prep was GREAT compared to what I used before! It wasn't bad at all! I have a vomit PHOBIA and had myself so worked up about the possibility of throwing up; as it turns out I got worked up over nothing and never felt sick at all.

I replaced the tap water with citrus flavored Vitamin Water (GI's suggestion) when mixing the prep and stuck it in the fridge that morning before I left for work. (For the first dose I used the orange citrus flavored Vitamin Water and for the second dose I used the Lemon/Lime). It was nice and cold by the time I started my prep at 7:00 that evening. To make it even colder I added ice cubes before I started drinking. Worked like a charm and didn't taste bad at all (it had a salty/sweet aftertaste but nothing overly offensive). I kept a glass of ice water by my side too and sipped that after each dose. The prep worked pretty quickly and the evacuation (for lack of a better word) was much less violent than my previous experience. Tip: keep alcohol-free wipes handy and "pat" dry instead of wiping with tp each time to keep from getting that sore, burny feeling. Even though I was running clear in no time, I tried to be a good patient and finish the second round of the split dose regimine at 3:00 a.m. I finished all but 8 oz. because my stomach felt so full. The best part about the Movi Prep was that it stopped working in time for me to leave the house for my appointment. My previous prep didn't, and boy was that a miserable experience!

If the taste lingering in your mouth grosses you out, lollipops definitely come in handy, or give your teeth/tongue a quick brush in between doses.

A laptop makes for great company while you're having quality time in the bathroom.

You'll be fine!!!!! I wish you luck!!

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear what you all thought of it. I'm glad for the suggestion on the flavors. I actually prefer orange flavor so that should help. I'm already planning to eat very VERY lightly the day before the "all liquids" day. That way there is definitely less to get out. :) I like the idea of a straw and extra ice too. These are all wonderful suggestions. I don't think I'll be able to do anything about the salty/sweet taste - that's in all of the preps. I hate it.

Do you think if I eat lightly the 2 days before the test that I could get away with only doing the 1st prep and not the second????

Honestly I thought Movi-Prep was the best prep I have ever done - I flavored mine with "Sunrise Orange" Crystal Light packets and it was definitely much better that way. (My GI told me to flavor it so it would be much better tasting). I have done a lot of preps and this one wins hands down.

Definitely have it cold - keep in the frig between 15 minute dosings. I also used a straw and drank quickly. I also rinsed my mouth out with ginger ale when done and sucked on a lifesaver between doses.

I did a Low-Residue diet for 3 days prior to prep and 1 day prior I did a liquid diet, and of course the day of starting the prep a liquid diet - this was highly recommended by my GI and I have to say it made it so much easier on ease of elimination and was much gentler.

I will admit the 2nd dose the next morning was not as easy as the night before, but definitely do-able.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I thought it was better than one I had before (can't remember the name) had no trouble drinking it or keeping it down. I also have a fear of being sick. It had the desired effect fairly quickly and sepent quite a bit of time in the loo. Please use all the prep even if you eat lightly the day before. a low residue diet is a good idea a couple of days before. The idea of this stuff is to wash out your bowels completely. If you don't they may not be able to see everything they need to on the scope and it would then be a waste of time.

I have a scope coming up and they prescribed movi-prep. Doesn't sound so bad as it's split up overnight. But I'll see...

I did Nu-Lytely last time and other than the sheer volume of fluid (like 2 gallons in 3 hours) it wasn't bad and tasted a lot like Gatorade.

ive had to take moviprep several times. My scopes are always early in the morning, and I'm a bit of a night owl, so I always stay up the previous night and just drink all the prep at once. i find the best way to deal with it is to concentrate on not grimacing. when you grimace it begins your body's oh-thats-nasty response, leading to vomiting. keep a straight face, and you can prevent yourself from vomiting. it still tastes pretty gross, so I take each glass with some ice, and ignore the timetable. The box claims the first stool should be an hour after you start, but mine are always right after the second glass. I drink a glass, wait 10 minutes, drink another, go poop for 20 minutesish, drink another glass, go poop, drink a glass, go poop etc until its done.

I have only failed to finish once, and I cant remember if that was Golytely or Moviprep. Regardless, I had to have some enemas right before the procedure. After fasting, not sleeping, and doing most of the prep, they are not fun. I highly recommend finishing the prep.

I think it tastes super sweet - not bad like some of the other preps. I mean, it's not good but it's just super sweet (IMO anyways). Nothing something you'd drink on purpose ;)

I usually do mostly liquid the day before, too, but I still did 1 cup of prep in the morning if I remember right. I was squeaky clean - and that's a miracle for me. I'm usually NOT able to finish the prep and get it all clean. So Movi Prep got 2 thumbs up for me in that regard.

Ok, a few of you have mixed your solutions with vitamin water or crystal light. Would it be INSANE of me to mix mine with a strong flavored powder like lemonade or tang? (Can I even drink something orange colored?) Would that just make things taste way worse or would it help?

On my instructions it says to avoid anything red or purple, and orange is pretty close to red.

I took my time taking the prep, and drank it slower than it said, otherwise I would of gagged and threw it up! I mixed it with flavoured water as it does say no fizzy drinks.
I used lemon and lime flavoured water and then added lime juice to it for the first lot, then the second and third lot I added a tiny bit of orange squash with a mango flavoured water, that wasn't as bad as with the lemon and lime. But I still couldn't drink it in the allocated time and thank goodness I only had to take 3 of the sachets out of the 4, it is really hard to drink so much fluid constantly over so little time.
I could never have drunk it with out putting some sort of flavouring in it.
Good Luck!!!

WORSE THING EVER!!
I gagged every sip I drank and puked some up at the end. I held my nose and took a chaser of lemon lime soda each time.
It tastes like thick salty chemically lemonade. Try not to eat a lot or anything about 2 days before hand so you don't have to drink so much. Thats what I'm going to try and do next time. I told my GI there is no way I'm doing that again though.
!
I hope it goes better for you , good luck with everything

I actually did this a month ago.
Definitely eat less two days before the prep day.
Refrigerate the prepared prep the day you are scheduled to take it.
Take 2 ducolax laxatives two days before. get things started.

Day of prep:
take 4-6 ducolax
mix one bottle of miralax powder into a 64oz. bottle of lime gatorade (largest bottle they make of gatorade)
drink 6-8 ounces of the gatorade solution
then very quickly with a straw drink the movi prep as directed
if you cannot get it all down add some gatorade/.miralax solution
then to kill any aftertaste suck on an Edy's lemon ice pop

continue this drinking schedule..

I did this and finished the gatorade mixture but never had to finish the moiv prep. I lterally threw half of the moiv prep solution down the sink and never used the second packet .

the doctor saw everythng and said my method worked.

Just had my first colonoscopy using MOVI-PREP and thought I'd post my thoughts......

Read many mixed reviews and was extremely anxious to say the least.
However, I can happily say that the worst part of the whole thing was the worrying.

Reconstituted part 1 (A&B) as directed (1L) the morning before my procedure.
I added 1 package of Crystal Light (Lemonade), and refrigerated so it would be cold when I started to drink at 4pm.
Let me note that the one package of Crystal Light is for 2L....(so I therefore had doubled up the amount of crystal light powder as I only used 1L H2O.)

From reading other posts I had hard candy, lollipops, sprite, and a barf bag ready.......

I did NOT need anything after I drank..
For me, the crystal light did the trick, and it really just tasted like strong lemonade. (Lucky me)

The only other issue I had was wondering if it was actually clearing me out....
about an hour after I took my first (250ml), I was essentially pooping "pee" the yellow color of the crystal light. It was pretty CLEAR the 1st time I went to the bathroom, and completely clear thereafter. (kept pooping clear liquid.......)
I was afraid and worried it wasn't clearing me out and that the doc wouldn't be able to see anything.

If this is happening to you, don't worry. My doc told me today that if you are passing liquid and it is clear then it has done it's job.
Colonoscopy went without a hitch.....

I really appreciate everyone who posted with their tips and tricks, and I hope this post helps some of you out there....

I had to have an endoscopy & colonoscopy on the same day. My appointment was 14:00 on the Tuesday.

From the Sunday - Monday morning I didn't eat much, I stuck to rich tea biscuits, cream crackers and on the morning of monday I had a small amount of white boiled rice. My instructions told me to start taking the moviprep at 6pm the night before the procedure, and at 6am on the day of the procedure.

Because I know my body, and it usually takes things a little bit longer to go through me, I took my first solution at 3pm on the Monday eve, [mainly because everyone who lives in the house is out until 6pm- and we only have one toilet so I wanted to get a head start!], and then I would take the second one at 3am on the day of the procedure. The same time scale recommended, only 3 hours in front.

So, took the 1st batch at 3pm. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - its very citrus tasting, and it smells much worse than it tastes! Though after drinking a whole litre in 1hr I did feel a little queasy towards the end. But managed it! After about 1hr of finishing the 'gates opened' and there I sat all night - till my next dose at 3am! I never experienced ANY cramps or pain, which is what I was mostly dreading. :) Just kept sipping water throughout the night too.

I didn't manage to get any sleep at all, so I was quite tired- however I stuck to the program and took my next litre of solution at 3am. This ensured to clean out what was left - though I am glad that I took it 3hrs prior to the time recommended, as I let out the last of it about an hour before going to the clinic.

Please note that I'm not recommending to take your movi-prep earlier than recommended - i just did so becasue I know my body and it was just more convenient for me to do so!

All in all it wasn't an unpleasant experience at all - besides the obvious watery bowel movements [which it is designed for], and the very slight nausea after drinking a lot of very sweet tasking solution in such a little space of time! :)

Good luck to everyone else out there! :)

Two things: 1) Movi-Prep goes down better with a straw, chased by 7-up or other clear liquid to remove the taste. 2) Buy 2 or 3 rolls of the SOFTEST toilet paper you can find. Believe me, you'll need it.
Other than that, the prep time is the worst part. The actual procedure is nuthin'. Well, you may leave a bit of your dignity at the Dr's office.

I've only had two scopes, so I'm not an authority. But I used Nu-litely for the first, and Movi-prep for the second, and the second was a much better experience.

I flavored the Movi-prep with a Mojito-mint Crystal Light packet, which helped with the taste. I drank it through a straw, but sipped rather than chugged, which kept me from throwing up (the nurse practitioner at my GIs office explained that the opening to your stomach can only handle so much liquid at once, so drinking it all as fast as possible is really bad advice if you're trying not to throw up).

I tried to cut down on insoluble fiber and high fat foods 3-4 days before the scope, and drank lots of gatorade beforehand. (somewhere, I read that the chills and shaking I had with my first prep were probably related to losing electrolytes, so I figured it was worth trying to "load" them in advance).

I've opted for baby wipes (preferably with aloe) instead of toilet paper with both preps. Last time to distract myself, I grabbed several cheesy chick-lit novels from the library, and drank lots of ginger ale out of a champagne flute.

I used movi-prep for my first colonoscopy and it was much better than type used for my second one even though it was much more to drink. I chased it down with chicken broth. Honestly, psychologically the thing that helped me get through it the most was playing really loud energetic music on my head phones and drinking on the chorus which distracted me from the taste and helped me pace myself so I would not throw up.

I had my first colonoscopy done yesterday with Moviprep before
My thoughts :-

Moviprep : No big deal, tasted nice (lemon flavor) and then after about an hour I locked myself in the toilet with my Ipad for about an hour and a half. A sat on the loo the whole time.
All in all it was just like having the runs and diarrhea but without any unpleasant side effects. I found the whole process very comfortable. After a while you are just pooing yellow water ....

My appointment was ain the afternoon : So day before I had lunch at 1pm then stopped eating, took the prep at 7pm and again at 6am the following day. By the end of the 2nd dose I was pooing clear yellow water.

The colonoscopy itself was a non event ... interesting to watch on the screen.
I was sedated but could only feel very mild stomach cramps, nothing uncomfortable.
Afterwards I felt very bloated and had to sit on the toilet about an hour after the procedure to break large amounts of wind, this carried on for a few hours and was from the air they had used during the procedure to open up the bowel.

All in all ... don't be worried about having it done, its fine ...

I also had an endoscopy at the same time which was also fine, the throat spray anesthetic even tasted like a fine liqueur (the consultant joked 'what have you been drinking'!)

I write this to reassure people, I'm 48 and was very skeptical about having the colonocscopy and endoscopy having never been into hospital in my life ... like you I trawled the web ... PLEASE dont get worked up over it, I will have another in 5yrs time and will feel totally different knowing how painless the process is.
