As I have been seeking alternatives to lower my cost of meds I came to understand that Pentasa comes in tabs and capsules.
Shire makes Pentasa in capsule form in US. Ferring makes the tabs for UK market and I think the Canadian market also. My doc says that the capsules are differrent and better. It seems like, if my doc is correct (capsules are better) and they can only be purchased in the states, then the rest of the world is not getting the best med alternaitve. Something is not adding up here
So here are the questions
1) Can you get Shire mmanufactured 500mg Pentasa capsules in Canada?
2) Does anyone know if there is difference between between the ferring manufactured tabs and the shire manufactured capsules?
Thanks in advance for your insight turn
David

As an aside, it seems like there is a lot of buying power if we combined the dollars spent by folks on this site. I am not sure what do do about it but I am thinking about it.....

I just called a Canadian pharmacy. Ferring has the Pentassa license in Canada and therfore Shire capsules are not available. I am going to go to my Doc on Monday ans seek an alternative to Shire capsules. The difference is about 70 cents a pill vs more than 2.00 per pill.
Somthing still does not add up to me. If (and for me it is a big if) capsules are better, why is this not available in Canada???

I went to the Shire web site and the only place Shire makes and distributes Pentassa is USA.

When I took Pentasa 10 years ago they were tabs (I'm in Canada). Not all drugs are marketed in Canada. For instance, I don't know if I could get access to Xifaxan if I wanted to. Drug companies don't like the fact that the government asks for bulk discounts...is my guess.

Can't answer your questions I'm afraid but I was also told by IBD nurse that they come in a liquid form too(although tbh do not know who makes them)_

Thanks for the responses. It still seems like something is not quite right. If the caps are better they should be available in canada. I am going to talk to the doc. If I am convinced they are better by the doc, I will post here. Would'nt it be funny if instead of yanks buying from canucks, canucks started buying from yanks
