Hi

My daughter has crohn's, she only had a short course (1 month all up) of steroids recently, but the disease is coming back again quickly. Anyway I was reading about all the side effects for children on long term steroids, but I can't seem to find anywhere that will tell me how long is long term. Can anyone answer that?

Thanks

I don't know for sure, but I think of "long-term" as 4+ months. Maybe someone else has another answer. I've never asked the doc to define it, but I know it seems to take me about 4 months on steroids to start losing hair etc. Also my bones are affected, but the docs still don't seem to worry about a month or 6 weeks on steroids.

I have been on endocort for three years. I use to take 2 3mg caps a day until November when I flared again. I now take 3 3mg a day. The doctor said just to make sure I am taking a high dose of calcium daily.

Thanks for the replies, wow I didn't realise you could lose hair from steroids, that is terrible. My Daughter is very young so growth is a major problem with the steroids, I really don't want her on them if I can help it. There isn't alot of alternatives though.

Thanks

Hi,

Prednisone effects everyone differently. I have been on it for 30 years, and my hair does not fall out. My biggest complaint is the weight gain from the fluid retension, and the severe adrenal suppression. Prednisone has been my miracle drug many times over the years.

All the best,
Julia

i have been on and off, up and down for so long...my doc is kind of mad at me but when i taper down a lot of times i flare and have to bump back up...i'm at 26 now down from 40...i kind of manage it myself at this point...the docs definitely don't want you on it longer than necessary.

My understanding is 3 months. It is at the 3 month mark of steroid use that they recommend a baseline DEXA scan be done for adults. Bone growth plates don't close until the late teens or early 20s, I forget exactly, so it may be different for children.

I've been on it since March and my GI Dr seems to think that isn't a long time on it I was on 40mg and now down to 10mg. My PC Dr and Hemotologist both feel that I have been on it long enough. Whenever I go and see them they ask if the GI took me off of it yet. Just went to my PC on Tuesday and seemed concerened about me still being on it. I keep getting sick and having weird reactions and I'm told it's because of the prednisone is playing with my immune system. I feel for your child and hopefully she isn't on it for a long time. Hopefully they can suggest something else that will work instead of prednsione.

I have been on predisone since 01'09.  I have been up and down on doses, and the doctor refuses to take me off.  I seem to have a reaction everytime I go under 10mgs on tapering off..I have gained 45 pounds, and I am extremely swollen all the time.  I am under the impression long term usage is over 3 months.

I'm also pretty sure that long-term use is 3 months...

I wish I was told about the calcium when I was on the predisone. I ended up losing (breaking off) teeth. I never had a cavity until I was 35 years old.

Now I keep on paying for dental procedures to keep the molars that I have so I can eat!
