I am visiting the in-laws this week and my father-in-law takes coumadin to thin his blood. This got me thinking because as we get older we have to add prescriptions to our already huge list of meds. Blood thinners are bad for us Crohnies, but got me wondering -Do we have any members that need blood thinners for risk of heart attack, stroke or other related heart conditions? If so, what do you do if you need to take them? Are there alternatives?

Why are blood thiners bad for Crohnies?  Everytime I'm in the hospital they give me blood thiners, I've never had a problem with them.

From my experience (not personal) with blood thinners, once you start bleeding it is hard to stop. Since Crohnies have a tendency to bleed I didn't think that would be good.

I've thought about this as a few friends have been put on plavix post MI's recently.  My conclusion is that our diets are low fat and/or modified enough that heart disease won't be the issue that does us in  . . .therefore a non-issue.

My diet isn't always low fat. Actually not near as much as it should be, but my body doesn't seem to retain any fat anyways...

I was on coumadin for Atrial Fib and in september 2009, I started to bleed from a flare-up of crohn's.  I lost that much blood that my lips were as white as the sheet on the bed.  The day shift nurse that came on decided to measure the blood I was losing and I lost 500cc in 1 1/2 hours.  They had to give me Vitamin K, 2 units of frozen packed plasma cells and 5 units of blood.  Needless to say, I am not taking coumadin any longer, buit I do take an 80mg aspirin every day and so far so good.

I was on coumadin for 6 months after having blood clots that went to my lungs. I didn't have any bleeding problems while on it, but my crohn's hasn't ever caused bleeding problems. Even if I did have problems with my crohn's, you can't have blood clots in your lungs and just not treat them, so I guess they would have just dealt with whatever happened if I was bleeding from crohn's at the time.

I have a friend with CD who had clots in her lungs a couple years ago also. At the time she had an abcess that she needed to have surgery for, and needed to get blood during surgery. It was a huge mess and she was in the ICU for a week or so because of losing blood, but after surgery and being discharged she stayed on coumadin and is on low dose aspirin now and doing well! In fact, she had a baby 5 1/2 weeks ago-needed blood during her c-section but otherwise things went well. Her c-section was done very quickly because she had placenta previa....and I wonder if that might have been because of the clots, coumadin, etc. Luckily having had clots she was a "high risk" pregnancy so she was monitored well.

I take the 80 mg aspirin daily. I won't risk the blood clot possibility I have.

Bleeding has not been a problem w/my Crohn's. I did have some superficial thromboplebitis in several areas of one lower arm and a blood clot in the axillary vein on that side due to improperly admnistered phenergan and toradol in ER and ended up spending 3 days in the hospital and six months on coumadin. Only time I've ever had a problem.
