Hi

I just wanted to know if when you have an colonoscopy if the Dr can usually tell straight away by sight, or do you have to wait for the biopsy results?

Thanks

Depends on what the scope is for. Visual findings (inflammation, ulcerations, etc.) can tell a lot, but if it is a diagnostic scope, to see if you have Crohns, the biopsies will also be key, since they may show microscopic granulomas which are very indicative of Crohns. Basically it's both . . . visual suggests, biopsies can confirm.

And sometimes vision sees nothing, the biopsies are needed to confirm - or worse yet, sometimes neither vision nor biopsies confirm despite "it's" being there hiding. *sigh* The small intestine isn't called the "dark continent" for nothing. Twenty feet of hiding places no scope can reach. Looped over itself, curled round and round ..... even the pill camera is not infallible. *sigh* But its our best bet at getting somewhere near a complete picture of the small intestine.

Hi

Thanks for your replies. My daughter had one yesterday and they couldnt see any visuals but given her history (she had ulcers a few years ago) I don't want to get my hopes up thinking its not crohn's. But it is nice to think it might not be after all. I just can't understand though how they can't see anything when its flared up?? Anyway we will get the results next week.
Thanks

Remember a lot of Crohns patients have disease primarily in the small bowel where the scope cannot reach. If the biopsies are negative, you might ask for a pill cam to look at the ileum.
