When the crohn,s is active , for me , I eat whatever I crave just to have some calories I get very thin. And its no fun being thin when you are in your late 40's. It shows every wrinkle, no boobs and so on. Now my crohn's is not active and I do have to watch what i eat. I work out doing cardio and weights. My problem is I have been so use to eating what I want when I want its getting in the way now. Im trying to brake some of the bad habits but its really hard. I'm at 150lbs and I hold my weight well for now but i cant put any more on or I will be going over board. I do like to keep alittle extra weight cause a flare up will take it all off and fast as you all well know. One thing I do like being a little heavier than thin any day. I stay away from the fried foods fairly well, I eat red meat once or twice a week and the rest chicken or fish of a sort. Trying to eat more vegies and fruits. When the disease is active I can't eat many vegies. But switching eating habits is very hard. I come from a family thats big. I've always been the smallest because of the crohn's. Just wondering if anyone elese has this kind of issue. Thanks for reading.

Hi Joy

I empathise with you and matilada - I am either huge on steroids/with inflammation or skin and bones from infection.

You sound really sensible and well balanced with your diet/exercise so I wouldn't worry about your weight as it is a illness of ups and downs although I know it is not nice to feel too thin as we age. Esp if everyone comments on how ill you look which they never seem to do when the weight is on!

Like you what I eat is ruled by the activity of the disease and I try very hard not to get too obsessed with what goes in my mouth even though one wrong bite could put me back in hospital. I had a spectacular obstruction on scroggin once when I didn't know I had a stricture ;P

At the moment I am settling after an obstruction and having yoghurt/banana smoothies in the morning and then snack on cheese, peeled apples, tuna, scrambled eggs during the day as I am hungry and then have a meal at night with some protein and whatever veg I can manage. Little often seems to suit me but we are all so different with our individual issues.

I think we should just enjoy what we can eat when we can and exercise when we are well enough. Even if it is just a walk to get some fresh air and a change of scene. But mainly don't be too hard on ourselves ;)

Hope your crohns stays in remission :)

Hi, my seven year old son was diagnosed with Crohn's disease a few weeks ago.  Right now is on prednisone, but tapering off weekly.  By the end of September he should be finished with it.  He'll then be taking 6mp long term.  He has already started the 6mp and seems to be doing ok with it.  He gets a check up at the end of September.  I have been thinking of doing gluten free with him to control flare ups.  Any advice or suggestions anyone?  All of this is very new and a bit scary for me so I'd love to hear stories and advice.  Thanks!!

wow 7 years old, unreal. I am having wieght issues right now and I've had cds for 40 years, I'm 60 male. and I am way to thin 5'4" 107, I need to put on 10 lb's and nothing really seems good to me, I have pain when i swallow and in my small bowel (resected spot) so I no what you mean about wieght, to me I'm so thin it's embarrassing, but have many bm's a day, lots of bile and mucus, so that alone keeps me thin, if you can tolerate it ensure is good wieght gainer, I can't tolerate it so I use goat milk and drink carnation breakfast

My .02.  I am having the same problem.  Not just because the crohn's is under control but  since my horrendous flare in Feb and March I just don't feel as energetic as I used to and am not working/burning calories as much.  Throw in that I hit 50 this year and I've got to watch what I eat all of a sudden.  I don't like this I WANT MORE ICE CREAM!!
Cut out soda's and juices including DIET.  That will give you a pretty good edge on top of what you are doing already.
