If any of you have read previous posts I have made then you know that I was on Humira and Immuran when I broke out with Shingles. It was bad. I was hospitalized and I had IV anti-virals every 8 hours for 11 days. They took me off of Humira and Immuran. I am 37 years old and my GI asked me if I had gotten the shingles vaccinnation after the whole hospital ordeal. I told him no b/c you have to be 60 and never had any imunosuppressants. So, he contacted his infectious disease colleagues and they have a plan for me. It was too late to call his office today to see what it is so I will call Monday. If your GI has spoke with you about the shingles vaccine and the protocol about age and immunosuppressants please give me any info that will help me decide what to do.

I have not been on immuosuppresants or had shingles. But I did ask about getting the vaccination, and was told I could not get it till I was 60 either. A coworker developed them for some unknown reasons and was telling me about the vaccination thats why I asked my doc about it. I know not much help but just wanted to let you know I was denied the vaccination too. Hugs!

Thanks. I am anxious to hear what he and his colleagues have come up with. I have a feeling that none of them really know what to do...... I do know that if I thought it was safe I would get one b/c I've had internal shingles twice and external once. Not a fan..... But, I am assuming that if the FDA deemed it unsafe for those under 60 then there must be a reason b/c I would think someone could make alot of money on vaccines for shingles on people of all ages.

This is from the CDC web site:
Why is the shingles vaccine only recommended for people 60 years and older? A person's risk for getting shingles begins to rise around age 50. However, shingles vaccine (Zostavax) is only recommended for persons age 60 and older because the safety and effects of the vaccine were only studied in this group, which accounts for about half of all cases of shingles occurring each year in the United States. Future research will determine if the recommended age for vaccination should be lowered.

I was told by my pharmacist that I could not receive the shingles vaccine because it is a live virus and I am on an immunosuppressant medication, Simponi. This excerpt from a Medscape article is of interest to those on immunosuppressants:
"Others who should not receive this vaccine include patients receiving immunosuppressive therapies (including high-dose corticosteroids, defined as 20 mg/day or 2 mg/kg/day of prednisone or an equivalent dose of other systemic corticosteroids),[9] patients with active untreated tuberculosis, and women who are or may be pregnant. Finally, administration of zoster vaccine live should be deferred during acute illness (e.g., presence of fever > 38.5°C).[6,9]

My GI spoke with an Infectious Disease dr. that is in a group that I approve of. Together they decided that I SHOULD get the Shingles Vaccine and 7 days later I should start taking Valtrex. I am supposed to talk to my regular doctor and see if he will order it for me and let me ask my GI any questions he may have.

I am torn....I would love to have the vaccine but I am terrified of any vaccines. Also, I am curious how the Shingles Vaccine works. I already have the virus so how does adding to it in my system keep me from getting it. This isn't like other vaccines that I am familiar with.

Also, as long as this thread has been on here, it worries me that no one has said that they have taken the vaccine, whether they be under or over 60.

I've never had chicken pox but was told I can definitely NOT have the vaccine since I'm on Humira.

I think my GI is wanting me to get the vaccine before I go back on Humira or any other biologic. I really can't decide what to do. I am also on 10 mg of Prednisone right now and they want me to stay on it while I get the vaccine but I swear I just don't know about any of this. I'm not sure they are sure either. I do know that I don't want Shingles again. If I thought it was for sure safe I would have no problem.

I understood that any 'live' vaccines couldn't be given whilst on an immune suppressant. Here in Uk son can have flu vaccine every year(as it isn't live)He had chicken pox at around the age of two and shingles when he was ten(lol I thought it was old people that got shingles!)  Don't know if that makes him more vulnerable to get it again or not? Ooops, somehow I have turned the print into italics and I don't know how to get it back to normal lol

Yes, me too. However they are telling me that thing I hear all the time about risk vs benefit. I spoke to one of my regular docs today and he "thinks" it is ok. I have another appt on friday with my other regular doc to see what he has to say also. I am more than likely going to get it. Here is why....more than likely I will be back on some type of immune suppressing drug here soon and my anxiety is bad even with drugs. I don't want to start and stop meds all the time b/c of a case of shingles. My doc today said that if I do continue to get shingles I will always have to take the IV form of acyclovir. So, I'll see what doc #2 has to say on friday and I'll update you.
