I have been on Remicade and 6MP for 2 years. Recently my feet started burning and my big toes are numb. My GP calls it peripheral neuritis and prescribed Nurontin to see if it will help. I am wondering if the Crohn's disease or the meds could be causing it. I have been in complete remission for about 1 year and would hate to stop the Remicade just to see IF it would help. Have any of you heard of a Crohn's patient having this problem? THANX, Frank...

Frank,
I developed peripheral neuropathy in both feet and lower legs from Crohn's disease. I had the neuropathy BEFORE i began Remicade infusions and taking Imuran. The most common cause of neuropathy in CD is B-12 deficiency. That was not my cause - my autoimmune system attacked my nerves.

That said, there are reports of patients getting Remicade and other anti-TNFs meds and then developing neuropathy.

Your GP should refer you to a neurologist for nerve testing to determine the extent of the neuropathy. He/she can also order appropriate blood test to determine if there is another cause for the neuropathy.

Yes, the tops of my feet burn and it is from the Humira. I have had crohns 30 plus years, and this has never been a problem until the Humira. My right big toe also gets numb. I was on weekly injections, but now I have my needle every two weeks and I find this has helped with these side effects.

I also have had the burning foot pain, but in my case, it was from Fibromyalgia. It was because of low vitamin D3 levels, now that I added the vitamin D3 in, my foot pain went away. Recently lowered my Vit D3 levels and it returned, but within a short time of increasing the amount I took, the pain has gone away again. Good luck!
