I know I have had this test in the past and many on here also have had the lab test...but what exactly does it show?  From what I was able to gather on the internet it just helps in determining if you have IBD and if so what type...I was Dx back in 87 and all past scope biopsies etc are indicative of CD.  My GI opted not to do any biopsies today He took 2 pics while in there that I am aware of and had 3 copies of them.  One for my chart one for the hospital records and a copy for me.  One was of the rectal area and the hemmies there and the other is of my diseased ilium.

My question is...if this test is designed to determine IF you have IBD and which type why would he run this test?  I also recall my 1st adult GI doc running it as well and I was Dx 9 years before I saw him...

This test is known to be very faulty. I.E. giving false negatives/positives. I think biopsy is still the best way to diagnose the disease.

I just dont understand why he wanted this test done I have been diagnosed for 23 years and all my colonoscopies with exception to the 1 he did yesterday all had conclusive biopsies that I have CD. He even saw active CD so why the test?

Only he can tell you that, really. And I would ask him; would certainly be curious myself.

In another post you mentioned that this doctor was considering putting you on Imuran/6MP, but that you had a reaction in the past so it was reconsider and you aren't going on it now. I wonder if the Prometheus test had something to do with that? Since they are the only lab that can test the specific levels. I know you aren't on it and aren't going on it, but maybe there is some base line test or something? Just a thought.

There are 2 prometheus tests.  One to determine if you have IBD and the other to test if you can tolerate 6-MP.  When I had a reaction to 6-MP my doctor ran both tests which did tell him that I did have Crohn's and not some strange other illness causing my new symptoms and that I was on the borderline of being able to tolerate 6-mp.

I hope that helps.
Started having issues with the Big "D" at age 19.  Doctor said Lactose Intolerance
Daugher diagnosed when she was 12 and I was 33.
My doctor said I had IBS.

8-2006    Emergency resection for fistula to bladder at the age of 47.
"Oh, it is Crohn's"     Dah!!!!

11-2006   Reaction to 6mp - isolation with bone marrow suppression and found out I had steriod induced diabetes.  Yeah!!!

Cymbalta, Metformin, Lipitor, Lisinopril

There's more than 2 prometheus tests.

But yeah, I didn't stop to consider that it may have been a different Prometheus test.

I really do not want to go back on IMuran ever again I had monthly vaginal yeast infections, thrush a cpl times a year on it..plus I do want to have a child probably sometime in the next few years and that is a category D med which scares me big time. I was on Imuran from when I was about 9 until about 4 yrs ago so 88-2006 and I was able to get off the pred with it initially but in the long run it did lots of damage

It may be an insurance requirement. My doc made me jump thru hoops even tho he knew what it would be. Insurance company actually made me get tests he felt I didn't need.

Dragon give the 6mp a chance. I did not do well on Imuran either, but tolerated 6mp MUCH better. So do the test and see what it says, then go ahead and try the 6mp, you might be surprised.

When I saw a surgeon a few weeks back, he thought my positive ASCA was a false positive due to my other auto-immune issues such as a positive ANA, joint pain and skin scleroderma. So far, my biopsies have not shown crohn's. I think he might be right.
