Hi,
I just joined here because I have a question. I'm currently on Pentasa for my Crohn's and... our plastic toilet seat has turned purple from sitting on it. I used google to try and find an answer but couldn't come up with anything directly. There were some sites about
it being related to pregnancy and the hormones involved, but I'm not a woman nor pregnant.
Has anyone else had their toliet seat turn purple from sitting on it? It's been like this for a few weeks. One night I went to bed it was normal and the next morning it was purple. I assumed it was my mom cleaning the seat with some chemical but she disagrees, and is suggesting my medicine is doing it.
I'm not entirely sure it is my medicine because I've been on it for two and a half years, and our previous toilet seat never had this problem. We recently replaced it with another plastic seat, althought I'm not certain it is the exact same seat.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about
or has had a similar experience please let me know!

Gosh! That's unusual.
I shall think... but in the meantime, I hope someone here will be able to provide a good answer for you.
I'd still blame your Mum: if the purple were coming from you, wouldn't it be more intense in the parts where your legs and bottom have contact with the seat, and less intense in others?
Are you sure someone isn't playing a practical joke on you?

People here have posted before that dried urine (sorry!) when taking pentasa turns maroon or purple. I have noticed that too.

Umm I have a purple toliet seat, because I bought it that way, but other then that I have no idea.
Do you know what your mother is cleaning it with?
I have to admit I do not use plastic seats (wood), nor am I on pentasa, could it also be a fabric dye transfer to your skin when you sweat, such a dark colored sheets, pants, undies?

I have to agree. If the seat was changing from me, there should be more color on the seat, instead of the part where you sit. There is just a round outline but no coloring in the leg region.
I'm pretty sure it isn't a practical joke. The seat has been like this for a few weeks now. My mom only took notice of it yesterday. That's when she asked me, "I have a weird question for you, is your medicine making your butt sore? The toilet seat in the bathroom turned blue."
That's when I mentioned it was probably her cleaning it, even my dad things the same thing. Plus, the seat is turning purple not blue.
I always lift the seat. There aren't any spots on the underside. There is just the purple area where someone has sat down and done their business. A dye transfer from the skin seems like the most likely culprit, although I don't have any new clothes. There are at least two other people who use the toilet so it could be something from them causing it and not me.

Well I am Asacol and none of my toilet bowls or seats have ever changed any color. So I am thinking its Mom's cleaning products. JMHO

I think that is the only logical explanation Nanners. One day the toilet seat was perfectly normal, and when I got up the next day after my Mom cleaned... it was purple.

Why is it us Crohnnies always get blamed for the mess in the bathroom?
Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 13. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistulas, perianal and perivaginal. Failed Humira and now only take a multivitamin, D3, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and fish oil. Currently looking into another maintenance med. Bad reaction to 5ASA’s. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

I'm not sure it is so much blame as a mother's concern. She's mostly worried about
something being wrong with me or my medicine doing something.

I know while on some meds the splashback of the seat under the rim would in fact stain and they would use the same cleaner on both toilets in the house except 1 was the one i used more so than the other

I just joined because I am experiencing the same problem. Yesterday I noticed that where I sit on my toilet seat (same seat for 2 plus years) that it has turned purple. This morning it was back to normal but now it has turned purple again. I have not changed cleaning supplies and I live alone so no practical jokes here. It is so weird....at least I'm not alone!

I can say that I too have seen this purple thing happening to the undersides of 2 different toilet seats (both are wooden... one is white and the other is light grey). The only thing I have found to remove it is an abrasive cleaner like comet or ajax probably because of the bleach in them. BUT you can't use those on the top. I originally tried removing it with a lysol wipe thinking it was possibly dried blood and when that didn't work at all I was truly puzzled.
I know I have seen this discussion before on here about
Pentasa. I wish they would say something about
this in their literature because I KNOW it is doing this. I have ruled everything else out.

BEcause of our animals we do not leave chemical in our toilet bowls JUST IN CASE a cover gets left up.
So, once I spent a night at a sleep lab, got up during the night to use the bathroom, and scared the heck outta myself when I turned to flush.
The water was a reddish rusty brown, I would have sworn from bloody stool - except I've never had bleeding (knock, Knock, KNOCK) and was having no symptoms and we were as sure as one can be w/this DD that I was in remission at the time.
The only conclusion I could come to is that there was a chemical in the toilet water that reacted w/the my Pentasa or Imuran in my urine or BM. It sure as heck woke me up tho and I didn't sleep the rest of the night!!!
I'm kinda jealous now tho. Blue or purple sounds prettier than rusty, reddish brown. Ah well, at least mine was in the water, not on the seat.
My computer says I need to upgrade my brain to be compatible with its new software.

Only if I eat beets does anything purple come into the picture, but wow, is it ever purple. Haven't been on pentasa in so many years , I don't recall but things were so crazy then I could have forgotten.

I think I've narrowed the mystery down. I cleaned my toilet with a water, ammonia mixture the day before. I had worn new black jeans that day and at first thought it was the dye from the jeans but nothing else was stained. It faded over night but the following morning, after using the bathroom, the purple hue showed up again. I'm convinced it was the ammonia.
