cold sores while on Humira

I've had a cold sore for almost 2 months. I used to get these in high school, very rarely, and when I did, they would go away in about a week. I also would only get them one at a time in the corner of my mouth. Well, lucky me, I have two, one in the corner of my mouth and another forming on my upper lip.

I'm assuming the Humira is preventing my cold sores from healing effectively, since I have no idea why else it would be taking so long to heal. Has anyone ever had a problem with them while on a biologic, and what did you do to heal them? Do I need to take a break from the Humira? I called my GI and am waiting for an answer, but I think he'll probably think I'm overreacting. I know it's not horrendously painful or anything, but I'm afraid of breaking out it more and having these last for a long time.

As Humira suppresses the immune system, anything like cold sores can become more prevalent as they tend to occur when your immune system is low. I presume you have tried all the normal cold sore stuff from the chemist and it hasn't helped? Then your GP may be able to rec something stronger.

I got a really bad one right before having to stop Humira due to what probably is systemic lupus. I doubt that's much help to you. Sorry, I can't suggest anything more. It did clear up after being off it for about 4 weeks (the cold sore) not the systemic lupus yet.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your input. I'm trying different non-prescription remedies but so far not luck, and I called my GI, but I haven't heard back yet.

I'm not sure about Valtrex. If this doesn't go away soon, I'll probably just have to call my GP and see what she says.

I was wondering if anyone had success clearing theirs up while on a biologic, and if so how long did it take.

Sorry can't help in that one as never suffered from cold sores, thankfully.
