I posted some time back that foods were tasting funny andf chocolate did not taste right any more.  I think I figured it out!  I forgot that I started using this mouth rinse more since my last dentist appointment.  The hygienist said I need to work on cleaning my mouth more with bacterial issues - she said my tongue looked coated.  I had used this stuff for a while...so I thought I did not add anything new to my routine.  But, I seemed to bump up how I often I use it.  I think it was "burning out" my taste buds.  I have not used any in a few weeks and things are tasting better again.  Maybe it's coincidence, but I am going with that for now.

I doubt it is coincidence, we are usually pretty intune with our bodies, so I bet you have your answer. It's nice when it is a somewhat easy fix.

I'm going to assume you're using Peridex or Perioguard (Chlorhexidine)?? If you were, taste changes are a common side effect of that mouth rinse. I'd get a tongue scraper and see if that helps. 95%+ of my patients have a coated tongue.

Could it be a side effect of your medicine? When I was on Remicade, I swore pretty much all my food tasted different....

Am I wrong if I say that having a coated (and cracked) tongue often follows this disease? // BEE

I'm sure that your diagnosis is right. All of us should remember that antibiotics can affect your tastebuds, too. Once, when I complained to my (former terrible) GI that anything I put into my mouth tasted awful, she told me to go see an oncologist, that I probably had cancer! My mother correctly diagnosed the problem as a reaction to the antibiotic that I was taking. When I stopped taking the antibiotic, the bad taste disappeared. Good for you for figuring it out!

tooth...I am actually using a normal Crest mouth rinse. Do you think that is the same issue? good thought on the scraper. I was just thinking of brushing with a damp toothbrush on the tongue more. Gag reflex makes that hard though. Will ask my dentist what he thinks when I see him in November...he's great and his daughter has CD too.
Still holding on with just Pentasa! Doc says most of my problems are side effects of my resection ('90) and my disease is doing GREAT and no sign of a repeat fistula. Meds now to control the lack of TI and happy to be out and about.

I just got one of those toothbrushes that has the reg bristles in the middle then has 2 rubber bristles on each side for the gums and the back of the toothbrush head is a tongue scraper works great.I have had many issues with staining thru the years from my meds not so much now but when on asulfadine my ortho insited I wasnt brushing and would raise his voice at me ...my mother who was a dental assistant at the time went in with me once since he wouldnt listen to me and that shut him up about it being my fault for lack of cleaning.
