I was prescribed Livalo for high cholesterol about 3 months ago and although I initially questioned my Dr about his choice since I have Crohns and  it had stomach disturbances on the side effect list.  I went ahead and took it as prescribed against my better judgement. It put me in the worst flare I have had in a long time. It also gave me a stomach ulcer.

I stopped taking it about a week ago and have been following a study that showed the success of drinking freshly juiced cabbage and the ulcer pain is now gone but I am still fighting the flare.

I just wanted to throw this out there to anyone who may be prescribed this drug in the future.

I had the same problems with Livalo. I had horrific stomach pains for about 8 hours after taking it. Didn't matter whether I took it with food or not. It also gave me abdominal cramping and loose stools. Prior to taking Livalo my guts had been in remission - one formed BM a day and no pain. My GP didn't believe it was the Livalo so I stopped it and after 3 weeks bagan taking it again. Within 3 days/doses all the symptoms returned.

Interestingly too, my LDL dropped a great deal while on the med but my triglycerides skyrocketed to an extremely high level. GP couldn't explain that either.

Ides- I am so glad you responded. I am glad to know that you felt better within three weeks of stopping the drug. I notice more improvement each day and finally I am starting to be able to use the bathroom more than a little bit at a time. It has been a horrible experience! Personally, I think this drug should NEVER be prescribed to anyone that has any stomach or intestinal problem such as crohn's or UC..
What are you taking now for your cholesterol? I am scared to try another statin but I know I have to do something...

pmedic - I have tried every cholesterol lowering med ever marketed. The statins all cause severe muscle pain and wasting. GP said Livalo was less likely to cause this problem. Never found out because of the severe gut issues. So, I take nothing for my cholesterol. Once I went an entire 30 days with eating no foods that contained cholesterol. My LDL climbed from 232 to 302! The only thing doc could figure is that my body started to manufacture more. My doctor had me do a restricted cholesterol diet for 30 days. Same thing happened. So I eat what I want. The good thing is my LDL is very high - 104, last LDL 236.

I'm thinking I will file a report with the FDA about Livalo. If enough of us report this side effect, they might put a warning for those with gut issues.

Good idea! I will also file with the FDA about Livalo. You are exactly right. This drug needs a warning!

Have you tried the natural supplement Red Yeast Rice? I have a friend that is on it. She takes 2 per day and it controls her cholesterol just fine. I think I will try this next. I respond so much better to natural products.
