I have been on 6mp for about 4 months and my hair is shedding a lot more than is typical. It's not noticeably thinner yet, but it might be if this continues. I'm wondering what other people's experience has been with 6mp and hair loss. Should it slow down eventually, or am I just going to have to learn to deal with it as long as I'm on 6mp?

Thanks,
Basil

There is a really great shampoo made for cancer patients. It is called nioxin. It really helps with hair loss. You can get it on Ebay, Amazon, or your local salon.

Imuran and 6MP are known folic acid antagonists. My doctor prescribed Folic Acid supplementation which halted the hair loss/shedding.

OK, thanks. I will try both of those things!

I am a 33 year old female with Crohn's colitis, or maybe Ulcerative Colitis. Colazal kept me healthy for about 3 years, until I gave birth to my darling little girl in Nov. 2012. Prednisone pulled me out of that long, awful post-pregnancy flare.
Currently on 6MP, Colazal, Turmeric, probiotics.

What I am about to say is complete hearsay, my old GI Doc when I lived in Boston told me this when I was initially DX'd with CD, and it turned out to be true, but I have no scientific proof, he said, "when you are sick your body starts growing thin brittle hair. Once you start the 6MP and your gut begins healing, your body will start to grow normal hair again, at which point all of the thin brittle hair will fall out as the healthy hair comes back in."

This turned out to be true for me.

My cousin has UC and was on 6MP and noticed his hair falling out and stopped the drug because of that (and his disease remains uncontrolled - seems awfully vain to me - I'd go with the Nioxin recommendation before going down that road).

I have this problem also.  I will try the Folic Acid along with my other regement. I've been using Avalon Organics Biotin B-Complex Thickening Shampoo and my hair looks a lot thicker and don't notice much falling out.  Nioxin did not help me, but we all have different things that help us. Ive been taking Biotin  (dermatologist idea)  I don't think its helping, maybe it takes awhile.  She checked my D and Iron levels, both were low and thats one of the many reasons of hair loss.  Now taking D and have to get with Dr on iron as that can be toxic, if taken in wrong amounts or kind.  The shampoo is cheaper at vitacost.com or swansonvitamins.com.  I've had this awhile, so there are many things that you can do to ease some of the stress that comes with thinking of thinning hair.  My hair dresser did a short layered haircut and a zigzag part, that improved the looks. I'm getting carried away here but want to share my tips. Everyone here has some good ones, I agree about the gut healing and things clearing up.  Thats part of my problem with hair loss, and iron and D vitamin levels. (nutrition absorption). My hair is thin and brittle.
Hope this helps and you find what works for you.  Hair loss is a tough one.  Keep us posted on what is helping you.  Good luck!

P.S.  I've just learned, I'm using the "original Avalon Organic shampoo"and it works.  They now have "New and Improved" people are saying this does NOT work.  Hopefully they go back to the original formula.

I recommend products like Nioxin and Reloxe for healthy hair.

I am losing my hair at an alarming rate right now. I never even considered the meds. I thought it was an after effect of surgery and severe iron deficiency. Thanks for the info on the shampoo. If I don't go bald in the next few days I will certainly be getting to the salon to get some!!
