Lab,

I think it depends on if you have any extra, your doctor and your health. I am really heavy now...(Thanks prednisone) but my GI told me that he likes to have a 20 pound reserve if possible because with Crohns that can be lost in one to two weeks. Regardless...if you are not feeling well he wants a call at 10% (blood work at this point and if I am already thin we start the scheduled Zophran at every 4 hours and anti cramping and pain meds) and at 20% I have to go in to his office....where he may change meds and order MRI or colonoscopy. Maybe this is because of my diagnosis...I dunno.

What's going on? Are you in pain or nauseated?

Are you eating less because it hurts to eat? (Or to reduce the amount of diarrhoea you get.)

If you are eating less, then it's not rocket science: that will be the reason for your weight loss. If, however, you are genuinely not eating any less than you used to, then yes, that's a cause for concern and you should get it checked out.

Thanks guys for answering my super vague question! smile
Yes, I usually keep like a 10lb buffer so if I get sick I will have extra pounds for safety but its gone now. I know I have been eating less with this throat pain that gets worse after eating but I've eaten less and not had this happen don't think. I tried eating more yesterday despite this but the weight still went down more today. It just has me a bit freaked out. I think it is mainly stress and this pain causing this but i don't know. its the lowest its been in two years. I told my doctors and they're going to check blood work just to be certain and figure it out.

With throat pain, I always found ice cream to be far the most soothing thing for it - just saying >_>.

@NCOT thats the cruel cruel truth. ice cream is also my sure fire way to tell if I'm loosing weight because of crohns. if i can eat tons of ice cream and not gain weight we have a problem. problem is ice cream is supposed to make the GERD worse and i now have to avoid it.\ some nights i give up and get little any way just to help my throat short term.

Yeah, the high fat content of ice cream could aggravate GERD :/ What about ice lollies or low fat ice cream/frozen yogurt? Not quite as tasty or high in calories, but hopefully still soothing without aggravating the GERD.

sadly I had switched to low fat frozen greek yogurt pops ( they were so good too, didn't even matter that they weren't as rich as the ice cream) a month or two before the GERD got really bad and i think it got better after i cut them out of my diet so I'm afraid to re introduce them at this point. Its so weird and frustrating because the only foods that help are veggies but they mess with the rest of my system and don't have the calories to keep my weight stable.

Yeah, I remember you talking about that now - it sucks.

How is your GERD now? Getting any better? I presume you've tried various meds for it and they've not worked, or at least not enough :/

Yeah sad i feel like a miserable complainer at this point cause it just doesn't go away. I mean it is so much improved since it started but its still very much there and dealing with all of the restrictions even though I'm on the meds is really frustrating. the acid burning feeling is mostly gone but still this odd discomfort/pain like food sitting in my throat a little while after I eat. I've tried several meds. they all have helped but never full been successful. The Gi just increased my medication today to see if it helps:/

Nah, it is miserable when something is chronic and there's no prospect of an end in sight: I feel the same way about my Crohn's pain sad

I'm not immune to acid reflux, but luckily it hasn't become a major problem for me and I can keep it at bay by just not eating large, fatty meals. I wonder if the feeling of food sitting in your throat is achalasia? My GI suspected I had that after my pill cam, where apparently the pill spent a long time (relatively speaking) in my throat. I think he was gonna refer me for further testing, but I said I didn't have any problems swallowing and he dropped it.

But you sound like you have all the symptoms for it, so I would check out the possibility.

yeah especially when it involves food- we all have to eat sad
I'll look in to it. The food does go down though. A few times in the beginning when it was really bad it seemed to be slow and get a little stuck but in general it goes down. it just comes back up. like throwing a hollow ball into a bathtub of water- it goes down and then bobs back up. Like reflux without the acid.
My doctors are interested in finding the cause though so we will se how it turns out.

I have not experienced this so I don't have a lot of input.

hey lab. sorry your still having this trouble. as for weight, I don't get to worried unless the loss is fast. the last time a couple years ago I lost 25% of my body weight in 3 months and we all got worried. that was from 210lb to 155lb. then it just stopped, stayed steady for many months and then went back up to 195. I have stayed there now for at least a year.

Hi Lab. I thought of another thing you could have: gastroparesis. That's probably worth looking into as well.

Thanks guys!
Wow Randy! thats a crazy huge drop!
@NCOT- I've heard of gastroparesis
the protonix was increased to twice a day and that has seemed to make the difference. I am not entirely sure yet if I'm 100 percent- I haven't been eating as much denser foods which usually caused the back up-I'm back to eating only soft foods and liquids for the most part since my tooth that had had a root canal a month and a half ago has decided to cause insane pain again- it's laughable at this point, it never ends. But good news is I felt good enough to eat a bunch more and put a few pounds on so i feel better knowing that it was more from the a lack of food.
Also, my pcp basically laughed at me when I told her I was worried about weight changes. I had eaten quite a bit before going so it made me a few pounds heavier plus I'm not under weight to begin with so my complaint came across as little silly. still it freaks me out when it starts going down like that. Pretty sure I came across as a worrying lunatic lol.
