I have already asked about HUMIRA earlyier but I had a question reguarding what I should do before starting it. I have read that you should get tested for tb before starting it but my GI neer mentioned it when I last saw him. I stopped by his office this morning to get my HUMIRA perscription faxed to PHARMICA and I asked the receptionist, because doctor was in surgery, she said she never heard of that being done and they had not had any of there prior patients tested before starting. Should I get this done?

Yes you should have a TB test before starting Humira. If you have been exposed to TB in the past Humira can cause it to "flare up" for lack of a better term. I guess the thought is that you may have been exposed to TB in the past and not know it. The TB test is easy and pretty painless, you go in one day, get a little injection one day, then you go back about 48 hours later to have the nurse look at the injection site. Better safe than sorry - go get tested.

I read the starter packet for Humira and I think it said you had to have a TB test, for the reasons Ladybugs noted.  I had the TB test, now I'm chickening out.  Entocort seems to be working.

CD dx'd Aug 05. Initially on Pentasa, now on Imuran 125 mg and iron.

I would definitely get the TB test done - why chance that you might be carrying TB and get even more sick.  My gastro did the TB test right in his office.  MB

Well I went and got tested, I go back monday to check the results. Simple enough, just poke and come back in three days.

Do you all like Humira and think it is working? This drug scares me but is being recommended by my GI.

I had to have both a TB test and a Hepatitis C test before I could start Humira.
Dx'd w/ Crohn's in 1979 at age 13. Bad flare 2008 but no health insurance so I dealt with it. Colonoscopy in July 2009 caused a perforated colon, emergency bowel resection. 2 fistula's, perianal and perivaginal.

Humira, probiotic, a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and fish oil. I also take Tramadol 50 mg and Klonopin (for anxiety) as needed.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

Everyone, this question was originally posted in 2007. I'm not sure why it was bumped, but am pretty sure that any answers are waaaaaaaaaay overdue at this point :-)
