I was taking flagyl for about 2 months when my toes and feet started to go numb.  I felt great while I was on it but of course I couldn't keep taking it.  I also developed a yeast infection on my tongue! =oP  I have heard of people taking cipro instead of flagyl..has anyone been taken off of Flagyl and placed on Cipro or are they used to treat different things.  I have a fistula and 2 fissures and I can't take this pain anymore.  I am trying to start remicade but of course when I need it the most they decide to take forever and a day to get me started!

I'm on both.  My GI said that the combination can be particularly helpful with Crohn's.  It wouldn't hurt to ask.  A couple things to remember with Cipro- you have to avoid Iron and mineral suppliments for several hours before and after taking it.  You also have to watch your sun exposure.  Some people have problems with nausea or d while on Cipro, but it hasn't bothered me much.  I have had another oral yeast infection while taking Cipro, but that can happen with any antibiotic.  The Flagyl, Immuran and Pred probably aren't helping, either.

I agree with the suggestion above regarding Cipro, I am one of the few that have problems with nauseau and it making me really sick. So make sure you eat with it and avoid sun exposure.

Flagyl was terrible for me -- so much pain.  Cipro was a breeze -- on it for years.  Good luck.

Hi d-
I had to stop flagyl at one point-I was on it for a year and I had a neuropathy. My GI at the time gave my cipro with asacol as a replacement and it put me into remission for years. Then I moved back to NY and the idiot GI I saw claimed I didn't have crohns and took me off all meds. I was fine for 2 years but then it started all over again. I have been in a flare since 2003.
36 year old female. Dx'd and undx'd a few times. Was just redx'd again 04/2007.
History of rectal abscesses and fistulas (28 surgeries including abscess I & D, exploratory surgeries, 2 C-ton drains and 1 fistula plug) Count does not include self bursting abscesses.
1st Remicade infusion 6/5/07.  Lots of joint pain, and a new fistula since the 2nd infusion 6/19.
Praying I'll get better soon so we can have a baby.

Ginger- I was just wondering if it put you into remission even with the fistulas?  My main concern is the Fistula and 2 fissures that are killing me.  I felt sooo much better when I was on the flagyl!

you should watch the sun while on cipro as it can make you extreemly prone to sunburn ;)

I feel your pain re the fistula and fissures. I have had 2 surgeries in the last 3 weeks for abcess clearing and fistulotomy/seton placement so this makes 2 setons/fistulas for me. also was on perc and t3's for pain and now when i go to the bathroom I practically scream in pain...so I think I might have tore something too.

basically I have found that from being on cipro 4 yrs it kept the abceses at bay more than if I wasn't on it- BUT..it never cleared up my fistula one bit..I didn't expect it to, the remicade did nothing either. They both hurt like a you know what and I'm getting sick of all this drainage and smell.

I developed the second fistula after I found out I was pregnant and had to stop taking cipro.
30 years old, dx with Crohn's in 1998. Currently on Imuran 100mg/day, Flagyl 1000mg/day
and Cipralex 10mg/day for anxiety. Just got off Cipro which was my drug for last 4 years.
Perianal fistula, and 2 more suspected. Crohn's only at end of colon, cecum. Remi and asacol did NADA.

This website has more info about Cipro.  It says that calcium taken with Cipro makes the Cipro less effective.  It also says not to take mineral suppliments or antacids for 6 hours before or 2 hours after.  It only gets specific about the calcium, but I assume the other minerals should be avoided for the same reason.

No, flagyl did, but cipro/asacol just kept me in remisssion. My earlier post may have been a bit misleading-sorry! :-)
