They do seem to crop up in tandem, which makes sense, as inflammation from CD in the upper GI tract would also promote GERD. There are also some structural factors in GERD which can ne independent of CD or any other GI condition. So the answer is most likely, sometimes, yes.

I had an EGD this summer & was told I have GERD & a hiatal hernia.  My Crohn's is in my colon so I'm not sure how related they are.   I don't seem to have many GERD symptoms, mostly just things I'm used to that don't bother me very much.

24 years old
Crohn's Colitis - officially diagnosed Feb. 2005
(Asacol, Imuran, Folic Acid, Iron, B12 shots)
Interstitial Cystitis - 2002
(Elimiron)
Raynauds - 2005
(mittens & space heaters, for now)
GERD & hiatal hernia - July 2007

I have Barrett's Esophogus from GERD. I never knew that I was experiencing any kind of reflux until my EGD. My doctor was shocked! I guess my stomach pain was the worst so I just didn't notice the other.

Currently 3 x per day 1000mgs Pentasa, Entocort (3mgs), Prilosec, multi vitamin, biotin, Lortab, Librax (for spasms) & VSL#3 (for probiotics) or activia yogurt.

Preparing to start Remicade because I am steroid dependent now.

For me, GERD came with CD meds. I had no problem with it in the years my disease was undiagnosed, but as soon as I started on meds (Pentasa the whole time plus stints on 6mp and pred) it popped up for the first time.
Currently in remission!

I have had BAD Gerd since Mid 70's, real bad. Probably had CD since I was a kid ( I am 64 now) , had the cankor soars , anal cysts etc , I didnt know I had CD till 1996 when my wife got me to ER with a Temp of 104 , they opened me up and I had a hole in my IT and feces was going around in my blood stream and I almost died. Laid there with an open wound for 12 days and healed from inside out...Thats when the CD was DX . Been on every med for both since, cant sleep most nights with the GERD, acid backs up thru throat and noise, etc ...Remicade ever 7 weeks ( max of 1o mg ) ...for three years, only feel good for 5 weeks. Also my mom died of CD , waited too long to get to the hospital and the feces also went thru her IT , doctors couldnt saver  her...for me its day to day. I hope yours doesnt get as severe...take care !!

Yes, I was actually dx'd with GERD 2 years prior to my CD dx. I take Protonix twice a day and that seems to help quite a bit.

Dx'd CD in August 2007 - 42-yr-old wife and mom
Allergic to Entocort and Prednisone / Not sure what's next
Currently on Protonix, calcium and multi-vit; and Flovent (for asthma)

I all so agree with Mike on this one.I was diagnosed with Gerd about three year's before I was diagnosed with Crohns. But my GI told me that they seem to go hand and hand with each other. My GI has no doubt what's so ever that I had crohns but synptoms just wasn't bad enough at the time.
