I was wondering why when I change my bandage in the morning from my fistula there is more pus than poop.  The rest of my bandage changes thru the day are more poo and barely pus.

Is this normal?

Maybe because your bowels are pretty empty overnight, so all that's left is pus?

My bowels seem more active at night time especially after dinner. I think maybe its cuz I use a heating pad before I fall asleep? I know heat is good to draw pus out maybe thats why

I changed the bandage 3 times yesterday and so far once today. It isnt pumping out. The only time I actually saw poo squirt out was when I was cleaning the area and getting ready to put skin prep on the skin yesterday. Besides that I havent seen it squirt out. In the Am the smell is bad too mainly due to pus. There are pentasa beads in the pus and it is a draker color probably since it may be mixed with poo.

DFLY, where exactly is this fistula? could be that at night our systems 'go to sleep" and so less poop is moving around inside that way normally you do not have to get up in the night to defacate. during the day when we "start up" again , things get moving more so more chance of poop in the fistual?

or... a crust may form in the night while you are not moving so much on the inside of the fistula, letting only the pus that is formed during the night seep out..

just thinking out loud

the fistula is at my incision site right below my belly button. Maybe that is what is going on

You can stick only the head of a qtip in mine but it is at least 1 1/2 inches in length (the hole is anyway, the fistula isteld must be smaller since it isnt gushing. The area it is in is the same area where I had that localized infection from that suture piece was before (the sutures were in 4 weeks the staples wereonly in 2) and it grew in so well that the surgeon couldnt get the whole thing out just the knot. He said it would work its way out and did with a lovely amount of pus I may add. Then I had no feces coming out of the hole where as now I get both feces and pus depending on the time of day, last time I ate etc.

dfly, i used to get corn, popcorn hulls, pieces of olive (when i had pizza) , even had some staples work out. it used to be under such pressure , the drainage would shoot straight out and be steamy hot! once i was changing the bandage in a walmart bathroom, and the thing exploded acroos the whole room, maybe 8 ft right onto the far wall. what a day that was. i had to caryy ABD's in my back pocket and every car i had a dozen at least. some days it would be dry and only required one change others, i would soak through 10 bandages in five minutes. these were the 8inch x 6 inch ones.

My output is generally the yellowish pus-looking stuff and it doesn't smell like poop. I can't really describe the smell. Maybe kind of like vomit.

Randynoguts,

Geez, no one told you about wound pouches? I can't wait to finish school and become a nurse. There's so many things out there that can make life easier, but health care professionals don't know about them or don't care enought to pass them along, and most are covered by insurance.

They could have saved you a lot of embarassment and probably would have been much more comfortable especially for the skin around them.
