Help!!! What does a obstruction feel like? I've never had one before. I have a sharp excurieating pain right under my rib cage on the right side. I have to keep my back totally straight or I can breathe. I can't sit or walk. I have a call into my GI but they are bad about calling me back. I don't know what to do. It's faded some since an hour ago but still painful.  It came on like a ton of bricks too even though I haven't felt right most of the morning.

That sounds like gallbladder. But when I had my obstructions I had pain around the belly button area that came in waves like labor pains. No gas or stool would pass. My stomach became very bloated. I eventually would get very nauseaous and start throwing up.

As for the gallbladder pain, it hurt from under the right rib cage area and went around to my back. My friend said she felt like she was having a heart attack.

Vicky maybe you should try calling the ER and see if you can talk to a nurse and ask her what she thinks you should do. Don't wait too long, if it gets any worse, GET to the ER. Keep us posted.

Vicky, sometimes pancreatitis can present like this. I notice that you're taking Lipitor. Are you're triglycerides high? Hyperlipodemia (sp)
can cause a pancreatitis attack....

If it's in your upper right quadrant, it may be gallstones. I wasn't able to pass gas either with an obstruction, but I think the area of pain would depend more on where the obstruction is. You may need to go to the ER on this one instead of waiting. If you become jaundiced with gallstones, it's a medical emergency.

What you are describing does not sound like an obstruction.

I don't know much about gall bladder pain, but I've had kidney stones, and the pain is similar to what you describe. There are different kinds of kidney stones, with both size and type varying, and therefore some variation in how the pain is perceived. Mine were small, like grains of sand, and the pain came and went as I passed them ( there were more than one).

I think you do need to get to an ER. Get some pain meds at least. The ER doctor might not be able to diagnose you - diagnosis is usually done by urinalysis and sonogram, and this is a job for a urologist. But for sure, get some help now - there is no need for you to suffer.

When I onstructed I did like Nanners. When my gall bladder went haywire I did the same as her. From what I have read these are typical signs of an onstruction. Susie

I'm feeling much better but I think I'm still going to stop at the ER on the way home from work. Something is definately not right.  Thank you all for your thought.  I talked to my sister and she thinks it was a gallbadder attack too.  She had to have hers removed a couple of years ago.  In fact, all four of my sisters have had it removed, everyone in the family but me.  And I thought I was the lucky one until I got dx'd with Crohn's.

Vicky- Hope you're feelin' better soon. All I can say is welcome to my world...gallstone DX about a week ago. Gallbladder is functioning fine, just have a stone trying to block the duct once and awhile.
Sharp searing pain under right rib radiating around to right shoulder blade. Nausea, vomiting....feel better after I throw up?

I just had that pain again. Lasted this time for ½ hour. I'm have a CT scan next Thursday. I hope they find out what is wrong with me.

Broomhilda - are they going to do anything about it? I never felt nauseous. I guess that's a blessing.

Sounds like kidney stones to me, its sounds like a big one trying to get out. I had to lay on my one side off and on for a month to get the pain to go away, until i had it taken out. Kidney stones are very common with people that have crohn's, thats what my specialist told me. Your pain sounds the same as what i had with it. Good luck to you Vicky.

Vicky just fyi not only do you have the gallbladder problems from your family, its also very common with Crohns. Many of us have had to have ours removed. Good luck and try to stay away from fatty foods until they get it taking care of, that can cause things to stir up.

Well, I just got out of the hospital. I had an obstruction. I felt fine when I went to bed and when I got up in the morning, I had a lot of stomach pain right between the rib cage. I started throwing up about every 15 minutes until I just couldn't stop. I ended collapsing at the airport and was taken to the hospital. They put me on steroids and antibiotics and various other drugs and gave my bowels a rest with an IV. So those are my symptoms of a blockage. My experience with a gall bladder attack (7 years ago) is much more similar to your symptoms. However, I think pancreatic problems may have similar symptoms.
