I had one about 2 months ago. It wasn't bad at all. They first took a scout xray jus to make sure I was empty. Then they had me drink 2 glasses of barium. It really wasn't that bad. Using a straw is easier for me so I did that and then once I started drinking, I didn't stop until it was gone. That helps me a lot. From that point it took me about 2 1/2 hours. It really started going a lot quicker when I started walking up and down the hallways. They would take pictures about every 15 or 30 minutes. Once it had reached the small bowel, they put you under flouro and the radiologist comes in and takes some pictures. Mine had me roll to each side and pushed on my belly a little bit, then it was all over! I drank plenty of fluids the next 2 days and had no problems with the barium coming out. Good luck!

thank you  so much i just couldnt remember. i hope i can keep the barium down. i have a mental block on it or something i cant drink things like that , or anything like sprite because of the fleet and it just automatically wants to come back out. i hope its not too bad we shall see.

but thanks i appreciate the info.

if i drink a lot after will it help the barium come out? does it usually cause C? i havent had barium in years becasue for my CAT scans they use gastrographin becasue i cant tolerate the barium.

thanks again :)

They told me if you didn't drink lots of fluids that it would harden up inside you like cement. Needless to say that was enough to make me want to drink as much as I could. I didn't have any problems getting it out though. It did make my bm's white though...haha!

i was scheduled to be at my sbft at 7:45 and got out at 12:30. The barium was not as horrible as the CT scan was at the hospital. I tried to speed up the barium by standing and walking but I wqas still there quite a long time. I did drink lots of water that day and the next but I still suffered passing the white cement. Good luck!

hey bunny....I am going for my SBFT in a couple weeks. I recommend bringing a roll of papaer towels and/or a wet hand towel that you can throw out. I have found that wiping my tongue after every chug keeps my gag reflex down.

I never had any problem with the barium hardening up...I just went white foo a while. Don't plan anything right after (so you can be in the potty as necessary) and don't try to eat too big a meal too soon after.

They told me that they consider it in three pieces...30 minutes for first, 30 min for 2nd, then 60minutes to 3 hours for the last. Walking does help in the end. The last time I had one, I was taking forever. They gave me a small hard candy to suck on and it went right through. I am going to take a lemon drop with me, but will only use if they say it is OK....I don'twant to make anything screw up and have to do it again!
Dx'd '90 (emergency rupture), symptoms ignored long before that, '03 fistulas and bad flagyl reactions, B12 weekly, Pentasa [until I surrender to the bigger meds]
I'm riding on the escalator of life....
