OK so I went for the last 1/2 of my gum cleaning and I broke out with bumps again in my mouth, which I think is Herpes Simplex.  This is the second time this has happened after dental work.  So I have a question, clearly my immune system is suppressed/messed up.  Should I be trying to make it better even though I am taking meds to suppress it, so that I don't get these things, or just let my immune system stay basically like this for my crohns?  I was given a valtrex and the bumps are getting better already, but if there are other things I can do so this does not keep happening, if anyone has any suggestions, bring it on! I am just really confused as to whether or not I should be trying to get a better immune system seeing that it's being messed up with my meds on purpose.  Has anyone experienced this type of stuff and what do you do?

Jenn,

I would call your doctor. I got mouth ulcer while on 6-MP. Turns out I was so immuno-suppressed that I got bone-marrow failure. Happened quickly too. Within 3 weeks. I ended up in isolation for 10 days. I suggest getting a blood test just to be on the safe side.

Okay I had the same immune system question as Jenn. If the ultimate goal for us crohnies is too bring our immune system down so that the inflamation doesn't do damage, how do we ever know where we are in approaching this on a day to day basis other than sed rates and the like? Also, Vicky, how did you know you were in bone marrow failure? What symptoms were you having?

Well this is the second time this has happened. the first time, a month ago (a few days before my remicade infusion) I told the doctor, I even had BUMPS appear on my face around my mouth, after a dental cleaning on the right side of my mouth, and my doctor wasn't too concerned. I was sick and had headaches and feverish and I told them I thought it was a herpes outbreak. I had my first outbreak over 10 years ago and got really sick, so it's all I could think of. And this time, I took a valtrex and it's getting better much quicker. I just wonder why do people take echinacea and stuff to help their immune system if the purpose is to suppress it? I just can't believe I can't even go to a dentist now without having to deal with this crap! Anyways the doctor ended up giving me the remicade after he realized it was not a bacterial infection or a cold. I also lost my voice for two weeks after that as well.

Jenn- I have come to the conclusion that CD is a systemic disease. Since your intestines rule every absorbtion factor of foods/meds, etc. that fuels your body. The herpes is yet another seperate issue unfortunately that you have to deal with as well. I know it is frustrating for you and like most of us you have to seek out the "answers" that fit your given situation. None of us have "all" the answers including the doctors/dentists. This is a freaky disease. Everyone here is on your side and will do what we can to offer suggestions and support. You just have to decide what's best for you. Keep your chin up and keep trying. You know your body best. We're always here if you just need to vent and don't want answers too!
