A question for those who have taken Flagyl. I have been ordered by the GI to take it three times daily for four weeks and am not liking it already. The nasty taste in my mouth is nauseating. Anyway, did you find you had excessive gas while on it? I have so much gas I keep having to go to the bathroom for fear of having an 'accident'. Alot of times it is explosive and long bouts of gas. Funny, I know, but not when I am at work and have to keep walking out. Worse yet, I have had 'gas episodes' that escaped uncontrolled. Also, I went to the bathroom earlier to find my panties stuck to my butt! When I wiped, there was thick mucous there. What's with that? I thought the Flagyl was supposed to be helping with that. Please try not to fall off your chair laughing at me and let me know if you had similiar experiences!

No, I have never experienced the gas on flagyl. As far as the nasty taste goes, this is how I do it. I put a little chocolate milk in my mouth, then I pop the pill, and follow it down with more choc. milk. You don't taste anything this way.

Did you just start it? If so, give it a week to help your symptoms.

Hi chroniemomx2,

The taste actually isn't when swallowing the pill. It hangs around all the time. I did just start the flagyl on Wednesday morning so I am trying to be patient. This is my second time on it, but the first time I was so D@#$ sick, I didn't care what the side effects were, I just wanted to feel better! Thanks for your suggestion and advice. I appreciate it!

Anyone else?

I know what you mean about it hanging around, but if you never taste it in the first place....it's not going to hang around! :)

Hey browneyedgirl- I had the taste problem to. I took my little brothers fruit roll ups and fruit by the foots and rolled the thin fruit snack around the flagyl pill to make it like a gel cap, and then swallowed it. I barely had the lingering metallic taste. I never asked the doctor the so I am unsure if this would effect how the pill is released or works. I did not have the gas problem but it sounds a little like how I get when I have dairy. Try cutting out for a bit and see if that helps. Maybe the med is making you have dairy problems. Also, what if you eat yogurt or take yogurt pills when you take it. Does that help with the gas? Try gas x strips. It sounds no fun at all. And I do know how you feel b/c sometimes I have to take bathroom breaks in class b/c I know a fart is about to escape. As soon as I hit the hall I get sweet relief but then it is too soon to walk back into class.

Hey FitzyK23,

Your post had me laughing so much that my daughter wanted to know what was so funny! But as to yours and crohniemom's suggestions, I'll have to find something to mask the taste with. I don't think dairy is the issue 'cause I haven't really been having any. To tell the truth, I haven't really wanted much of anything to eat because of the nausea. Hopefully, it will wear off. Although, I could stand to lose a few pounds! :-)

Oh hey straydog,
Didn't mean to leave you out, I will try the mints for sure. I have heard peppermint helps with nausea so it might do double duty! tongue

The taste is horrible. I had to get the brand name this time around ($$$), but they're coated and you don't really taste it as much, it's so much better than the generic. As far as the gas, I have the same problems....I'm afraid I'm going to have an accident, it's crazy. My stomach rumbles like mad. Flagyl has led me to develop a hairy tongue, it's very disgusting and I can't get rid of the infection, even with diflucan for numerous days. I got it the first time I was on Flagyl for a month, and every time I go back on it, it gets worse....it's really bad right now, I have lost a lot of my sense of taste. Maybe that's why I think the name brand pills taste better! :P It gives me horrible breath and such a gross feeling in my mouth. Good luck with your symptoms, I hope you find something that will help!

I don't think you can mask the taste. The taste isn't caused because of a residue from swallowing, it is caused from the ingestion of the chemicals into your body. It is a terrible metallic taste and I have always gotten anorexic while on it. On one occasion I remember baked potatoes were about the only thing I could get down.

Hey Belleenstein,

I think my post has gotten somehow skewed from the actual question, which was Does Flagyl cause you to have large amounts of gas. I believe this is my fault because of the way I worded my post but that's OK because the suggestions for ways to mask the taste are also helpful. :-) At any rate, it is definitely affecting my appetite both because of the taste and the pain the gas has been causing. My abdomen was actually vibrating earlier so much so that if felt like I had my cell phone in my pocket on vibrate. My boyfriend had some funny and interesting comments about this that I won't share here but being on this med has been annoying to say the least. I sure hope it starts to serve its purpose soon since I am stuck taking it for a full month.

Thanks to all who have responded so far!

I was prescribed Flagyl and Cipro together to take for 3 weeks. I only made it two weeks. I had horrible gas and bad, bad, bad D!!! And it was also mucous-y. He said that since I got two weeks in, that was enough....good luck!
