Ok so i'm on 35mg of pred now and i'm still having cramping/pain in my stomach, gas isn't too bad and no D since last Monday however every few days i'm having a little mucus (which I had once just after I was DX in 2006)

My family doc told me if i'm feeling like crap on pred come off it and go back to entocort and pentasa 1000mg x 3 a day.
I'm seeing my family doc on Friday and GI doc next Tuesday.  I'm not sure if I should just restart the pentasa now, and stick to the pred as well and see how I feel.  I felt better on entocort and pentasa than I do with pred alone.

So would you say keep taking the pred and restart the pentasa now? It can't hurt from what I read and i'm really not sure why I was taken off pentasa if it could somewhat help. Any suggestions? Thanks :)

Taking Prednisone 35mg, and now on Atenolol 25mg for fast heartbeat (thanks Pred!) and Restoril 30mg for the sleepless nights I have sometimes.

You can take pentasa with prednisone, it's a maintenance drug and not a steroid. That's what I'm on now. DO NOT stop prednisone with talking to your GI and getting a withdrawal plan in place. It can be VERY dangerous to just stop prednisone without weaning off of it.
26 year old female  diagnosed with severe Crohn's in Sept. 2007-suspected that I've had it for at least 3 yrs.  Currently taking Pentasa 500mg/8x daily; Entocort 3mg/3x daily; Percocet for pain; Protonix 40mg---was on Flagyl/Cipro for two weeks,(a few weeks ago), was supposed to be on it for three weeks but the cramping and diarrhea it caused made me stop

I take Asacol a sister med to Pentasa.  This medicine is an anti-inflammatory for Crohns.  I don't see why your doctor took you off it either.  Its a very mild medication with little to no side effects.  Also, as far as stopping Pred you can't just stop it.  You have to slowly wean off of it.  I would not make any medical decisions in this case without talking to your GI.  They are the Crohns specialist not your family doc.

For myself, the Asacol helps to keep the inflammation down and has helped me personally alot.  Hope you get feeling better soon.

God Bless,

Thanks for the quick answers. Yea I know I can't just stop the pred or i'll die pretty much, or get very sick (I never knew that until I read all the stuff on here, thanks HW! :) ) I'm slowly coming down off the pred 2.5mg a week, my GI said he seems likely to put me on Imuran when I see him, but when I saw him the other week he said not yet, he wants to get my issue under control with the pred. It's helping but not 100%. I'm seeing my new GI in March, I'm switching b/c i'm having doubts in my current GI doc, even my family doctor isn't sure about him anymore. I'm happier with my family doc than my GI doc. Anyways, enuf ranting from me, thanks again i'll start the pentasa and see how it goes.

Thanks Steph ;) The pain is still there after jumping back on the pentasa but somewhat going away, it's only been a day, too soon to tell I guess.

Popcorn is a big no-no. My daughter had it the night before her very first visit to the ER.

Daughter (20) Dx'd Crohn's 3/06. Misdiagnosed for two years, including by top pediatric Crohn's specialist as stress and needing more fiber but landed in hospital in 3/06 with cramps, vomiting, stricture. Now in remission with Entocort 3 mg (one pill), SCD multivitamin, yogurt, vit D3 1800IU, 900+ mg calcium, 50 mg B complex vit, 25 mg iron. No longer on SCD diet.

Yeah I tried stopping the Asacol (sister med to Pentasa) once and ended up feeling even worse. Went back on it and felt more like myself again in no time.

I'm still feeling like junk, this sounds dumb as it's been a while since I first started pentasa, but how long does it usually take for it to kick in? I just want to know so i'm not wasting my time with these pills.. lol
