Hi all....

I am currently on 150mg of Imuran daily, and have been for about 2 years nows....had a colonoscopy last week, and doc said he found a stricture.  I know he's going to suggest I switch to methotrexate.....anyone on it?  side effects? suggestions?  any kind of info would be great!!

Hiya

I've been on methotrexate by weekly injection for five years now and I must say it's been the drug that has worked the best for me. It gave me two years of absolutely brilliant health - no symptoms of Crohn's at all! I WAS NORMAL! However, as time went by things began to flare up but by increasing the dose this seemed to cure things up, until last year when I went on Infliximab. And although Infliximab has saved me  - it hasn't been as brilliantly effective as methotrexate was in the beginning....but everyones different aren't they...I know that methotrexate hasn't worked for some people...but that doesn't mean it won't work for you.

As for side effects, I ain't going to lie it's the nausea...but again people experience this differently. Some people are physically sick, whilst others feel a little sick the day after. With me, some weeks I will hardly feel sick at all and then the next it can be quite irritating. And although I hate to admit this I do think a lot of my nauesness Is psychological - i start feeling sick before I have even had it! My advice is to try and not worry about it - if it works well for you it is worth it!

Hope this has helped a little....

I take the oral form of mtx it took me a little while to adjust . The worst side effect i had in the beginning was feeling very fatigued the next day, that gets better in time. I've been on mtx for about two years now and i've had no flares since.

Have any of you on Methotrexate had a problem with their white blood cell count? I didn't realize so many people with CD use this drug.
Who prescribes it? Gi? Rheumatologist?

Thank you. I read your other post too, crohnie42, about folic acid. After the holidays I plan to check back with the rheumatologist since no one else seems to be sending me in that direction. The gi doctor "treats the gut and if your feet are bothering you that much you need to go back to rheumatology" and my primary care NP wants to treat me with Lyrica. This has been going on too long. The rheumatologist mentioned Methotrexate one time before when I had an inflammatory arthritis of my knee. I run a low WBC- between 2-3,000 but I just had a bone marrow exam that was normal so whatever is causing my low WBC apparently my bone marrow can keep up. Since I don't qualify for remicade or humira at this point......you gotta do what you gotta do I guess.

i've been on methotrexate for severl months now.it seems to work well with my remicade.however,if your soctor hasn't told you, when you are on methotrexate, you can't get pregnant or get anyone pregnant because the baby could have sever birth deffects.i would talk to your doc about this.if you have any questions for me,i would be glad to answer them the best i can.
